With the two BJP members quitting the Lok Sabha after winning seats in the Assembly, the BJP's strength has slipped to 272. If a sitting member of the legislature takes membership of another, the earlier membership automatically expires within 14 days. The Lok Sabha secretariat issued a bulletin on May 19 - the day the two were sworn in as MLAs - announcing that Speaker Sumitra Mahajan had accepted their resignations with effect from May 18. Asked about the numbers, Lok Sabha secretariat officials mentioned a "technical glitch" and said it would be rectified to reflect the resignations. Curiously, the officials said, the bulletin could no longer be found online.
