The US president has warned that Hamas has a ‘very short period’ to disarm as part of a ceasefire deal or there will be ‘hell to pay’. In a joint press conference with the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump said: ‘If they don’t disarm, as they agreed to do, they agreed to it, then there’ll be hell to pay for them’

Since 2017, just 16 antibiotics have gained widespread regulatory approval – mostly close relatives of medicines already in use and so unlikely to evade resistance for long. The development of new ones is a slow and unprofitable business, curative medicines being less lucrative than ones treating longer-term conditions. More broadly, it is hard to see where the stream of other new antibiotics we need could possibly come from. The prevailing scientific evaluation is that when it comes to antibiotics, we must run very fast indeed just to stay in the same place. Sadly, the scale of future breakthroughs is going to seem miserly compared with the curative bonanza of the 20th century.

Just two days ago, Russia launched an onslaught of strikes on Kyiv, targeting energy sources and residential buildings. Earlier, Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, claimed Ukraine had tried to hit Putin’s residence in the Novgorod region, south of St Petersburg. Second, Ukraine only strikes legitimate military targets in the Russian territory—in response to Russian strikes at Ukraine. Share Updated at 16.36 GMT6h ago 16.10 GMT Some more from Zelenskyy responding to Moscow’s claim that Ukraine attacked Putin’s residence in northern Russia overnight. He said that Ukraine attacked the Russian president’s state residence with 91 long-range drones on 28-29 December, without offering evidence.

The search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 is expected to resume on 30 December, more than a decade after the plane disappeared with 239 people onboard in one of aviation’s greatest mysteries. Flight MH370 veered off course and vanished from air traffic radar during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on 8 March 2014. In 2018, Ocean Infinity conducted a three-month search, though this also proved fruitless. However, the report dismissed theories that had suggested the pilot and first officer brought the flight MH370 down in a suicide mission, and ruled out mechanical failure as a cause.

Sciences humaines.

Teenage couples skated hand in hand, while the watching crowds sipped mulled wine and hot chocolate to a soundtrack of Nat King Cole. This was the setup I witnessed at this year’s Atreju, Italy’s biggest rightwing festival, which has been running since 1998 as an annual celebration of patriotism and nationalism. Fantasy fans may clock this from its name: bizarrely, Atreju (Atreyu in English) is the main character in The Neverending Story. On the one hand is a good Italy: made up of patriots who express nationalist pride in food, landscape and politics. As one Atreju panellist put it: Italy was once chaos, and now it is stable and credible.

In Hong Kong, where dissent is now characterised by silence, few dare openly criticise the government or the Chinese Communist party (CCP) that controls it. Chow says this has long been a problem in Hong Kong, but has been made worse by the region’s new national security regime. Less than a fortnight after the blaze, Hong Kong held “patriots only” legislative council elections, with only candidates vetted by the government allowed to stand. “Even if we left Hong Kong, the fear would linger,” he says, referring to Beijing’s increasing practices of targeting critics overseas. Instead, he says, “I want to stay in Hong Kong and get used to living with fear.”Additional research by Ching Wong
