Yet fast forward to December 2025, and one question persists: did the cold war – the west’s many-fronted, global confrontation with Moscow and its allies – ever truly end? Think of 9/11, which led the US to declare a “global war on terror”. True turning points in history are actually quite rare – and difficult to spot. If one is allowed a wish for 2026, it’s that there be no great geopolitical turning points, no epic spasms or watersheds (with possible exceptions for Putin’s defeat and Trump’s resignation).

Nepal TV host and ex-rapper mayor form alliance for election after youth revolt
Two of Nepal’s most popular political leaders have formed an alliance ahead of next year’s election in the wake of deadly youth-led protests earlier in the year that ousted the government. Television host Rabi Lamichhane, the 51-year-old chairperson of the Rastriya Swatantra party (RSP), and the 35-year-old rapper turned Kathmandu mayor Balendra Shah pledged to address the demands of the younger generation following September’s deadly anti-corruption protests. According to the agreement, Lamichhane will remain the party’s chairperson, while Shah will be the candidate for prime minister in the 5 March election. He set up the RSP in 2022, tapping into widespread discontent at Nepal’s elderly political leadership and becoming the deputy premier and interior minister. After the meeting, Karki wrote on social media that the election was a shared responsibility of all stakeholders.

Munich’s surfers foiled again after city thwarts effort to restart river wave
A row over the disappearance of a famous river surfing wave in Munich has escalated after authorities removed a beam inserted over Christmas to recreate the attraction. The Eisbach wave on a side branch of the Isar River had been a landmark in the Bavarian city since the 1980s but it vanished in October after annual cleanup work along the riverbed. The Eisbach wave was considered the largest and most consistent river wave in the heart of a big city and had become a tourist attraction in Bavaria’s state capital. Franz Fasel, the head of the IGSM, told AFP in July that 3,000 to 5,000 local surfers were using it.
