The government on Saturday scrapped its policy of capping the price of diesel at 30 baht per litre. Sunday’s 2-baht rise was approved by the Fuel Fund Executive Committee on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the new price cap for diesel has been set at 35 baht per litre. The Energy Ministry said the Oil Fuel Fund spent about 50 billion baht to keep the price of diesel capped at 30 baht per litre. The government decided in April to scrap that ceiling to reduce pressure on the Oil Fuel Fund.

Navy trainer to be discharged over hazing scandalThe navy has jailed for 30 days an instructor who allegedly punished new recruits by forcing them to drink semen, before he will be discharged for a serious breach of the military's disciplinary code. Vice Adm Pokkrong Monthatphalin, navy spokesman, yesterday told the media that Petty Officer Second Class Taksin Ngokpilai was transferred to an inactive post amid an investigation into the matter. Vice Adm Pokkrong said a navy panel ruled the allegation had grounds, prompting an order to detain PO2 Taksin for 30 days. As this act was found to have seriously sullied the reputation of the military, PO2 Taksin will also be discharged, he said. Navy chief Adm Somprasong Nilsamai had said all supervisors must ensure that instructors behave appropriately and take care of recruits properly, Vice Adm Pokkrong said.

Chanettee gunning for Thailand Mixed hat-trickRayong: Promising teen Chanettee Wannasaen remained on course for her third straight Thailand Mixed title after she established a convincing nine-shot lead during the third round actions at Rayong Green Valley Country Club yesterday. She left a daunting task for Parinda Phokan and Sangchai Kaewchaoren, each with 207, to catch up with her in today's final round. Currently, Chanettee and Prom Meesawat are the only multiple Thailand Mixed winners, each with two wins. I expect the pin positions will be tougher in the final round," Chanette said. Sangchai, the 2021 Thailand PGA Tour Order of Merit winner, was one of a few players who enjoyed a bogey-free round.

With a huge lead going into the final round, the red-hot teenager stands a great chance at winning three successive Thailand Mixed series which will make her the first player to win three times on the Tour. Currently, she and Prom Meesawat are the only multiple Thailand Mixed winners, each with two wins. I expect the pin positions will be tougher in the final round,” Chanette added. I need to fix my approach shots and hope to raise my game in the final round,” said the 2017 Thai LPGA Tour No 1.

He said the indebtedness was caused by salaries not being enough to cope with the cost of living and increasing prices of products. Those who already have debts have to be careful when spending and repaying the debt. He said workers are requesting the government to increase wages to keep pace with the current cost of living. They believe the current wage is too low when compared to the increasing cost of living. They might lack the liquidity to increase the wages and may have to reduce the workforce instead.

Diesel price cap to rise on SundayThe committee managing the Oil Fuel Fund yesterday approved a proposal to raise the diesel price cap from 30 baht per litre to 32 baht from Sunday, prompting a transport association to threaten to raise their service fees by 20%. As well as raising the price cap, the Energy Ministry, Oil Fuel Fund Office and other organisations will keep a close watch on global oil prices and make a weekly assessment on whether the price cap needs to be raised further, energy permanent secretary Kulit Sombatsiri said. If so, the diesel cap will climb by no more than 1 baht a week, while the new ceiling of the price cap will become 35 baht per litre despite the actual price of diesel already being well over 40 baht per litre, he said. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, meanwhile, implored people to understand the need to raise the diesel price cap, government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said. Loans sought previously to also subsidise diesel prices have already been used up as well, said Gen Prayut, adding the government has been dedicating resources to supporting the diesel price subsidy because it is a major cost of consumer products and services.

Poon forecast the baht would fluctuate and likely test the resistance level of 34.50. However, he did not expect it to drop much below 34.50 as risk-on market factors would support the currency. He said the generally risk-averse market coupled with the Covid-19 situation in China could add downward pressure on the baht. The Thai currency is also being squeezed by dividend transactions and gold purchases, with investors buying more of the precious metal as the price drops. However, foreign investors are currently making net purchases in the Thai stock market, meaning the baht may not breach the key resistance level, Poon added.
