Both Thai and migrant workers at several sites were found to be moving from one camp to another and spreading the virus, he said. Construction workers do not stay at one site for long. Bangkok has 409 construction sites, many owned by a few companies which shuffle their workers about, he added. Regular inspections of markets are conducted while Covid-19 testing of at-risk groups is being stepped up.

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon on Thursday brushed aside speculation that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha might call an early general election. If not, there is nothing,'' said Gen Prawit, who is also the leader of the ruling Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP). Gen Prayut told cabinet colleagues on Tuesday that since the government only had one year left in office they should hurry up and implement projects of benefit to the people. Despite playing down talk of an early election, Gen Prawit would not categorically confirm that the government would be able to serve out its four-year term. A PPRP source has nevertheless told the Bangkok Post that Gen Prawit had instructed party MPs to prepare for an election, possibly early next year, without being specific about the likely date.

A gender advocacy group fears that a campaign for scrapping the tax on period products will stall due to political instability. "Many countries have abolished the tax on period products. Scotland is the first country in the world to make period products free for all after a four-year campaign. The country passed the Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Act last November. If one pad costs 5 baht, women have to pay 125 baht per month, including the tax of 9 baht.

End defence fund secrecyThe opposition's move to dig into the government's classified budget, funds which are free from scrutiny by the House of Representatives, deserves public support. The party has appointed 15 members to a House budget review panel. Yutthapong Charassathien, deputy leader of the party, said the classified funds were not fleshed out. It's unfortunate the government maintains the classified budget for inexplicable projects and activities. Now it's up to the 72-member House budget review panel.

Govt jab rollout falls short of public's hopesA few minutes after the prime minister entered Bang Sue Grand Station, dozens of officials formed lines and followed suit. Each wearing a face-mask and respecting social distancing, they were ready for the opening of the national vaccine rollout day on Monday. Cashing in on the meaningless ceremony was already inappropriate -- the ministers didn't seem to realise the risks of the unnecessary site inspection for the prime minister and his entourage on vaccination day. In most advanced countries, vaccination sites have been approved and set up by professionals without prime ministers stealing the show. The high efficiency seems like good news and should fulfill the prime minister's dream of administering 100 million doses within this year.

Ignoring its social roots is one of the main reasons why Thailand's efforts to tackle ocean plastic waste are far from being successful. The documentary A Plastic Ocean helps sensitise the public about the importance of efficient waste management by local communities to reduce marine pollution. The state authorities can no longer treat locals as small, unimportant people to tackle marine plastic pollution. They play an important role in reducing marine plastic pollution. The government should close the disparity gap and empower them by making comprehensive state services available to local communities.
