In a startling breach of security, activists from a Pro-Palestinian group on Friday broke into Britain’s largest air force base and damaged two aircraft in what they said was a protest against the country’s military support for Israel. The group, called Palestine Action, posted footage online showing two people using electric scooters to move around the base, R.A.F. Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, which is used for overseas operations. In a statement, the British prime minister, Keir Starmer, called the incident “disgraceful,” saying: “Our Armed Forces represent the very best of Britain and put their lives on the line for us every day. It is our responsibility to support those who defend us.”

The message from the European leaders amounted to a condemnation of Iran’s military nuclear programme and how a negotiated solution might be arrived at. But while I am told the European representatives expressed a willingness to meet Iran again, there was no agreement on where or when this might happen. I understand the Iranian foreign minister told the meeting that Tehran couldn’t negotiate with the United States while the Israeli offensive continued. But the European ministers said the best way to secure a ceasefire was to come to the table. It is expected that David Lammy will speak to his US counterparts over the weekend.

A rapid study by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) research group also found the current heatwave in the south-east of England was around 10 times more likely than without human activity warming the planet. But without humans warming the atmosphere by around 1.3C since pre-industrial times, such a heatwave would only have occurred about once every 50 years, the study shows. Heat of that level could be expected in June once in 25 years in the current climate, but only once in 2,500 years in June before industrialisation, the researchers said. “With every fraction of a degree of warming, the UK will experience hotter, more dangerous heatwaves. “Making our societies more equal is essential to reduce the impacts of climate change,” Dr Otto said.

The longest by far is a detailed and polemically charged analysis of contemporary liturgical writing and experimental worship. So, not all contemporary liturgical writing is summarily dismissed as a disaster, but most of it is. When we repeat the word “holy” in singing the “Holy, holy, holy”, it is not because we cannot find other words, but because we are caught up in the ineffable. In his analysis of the language of worship, Spurr frequently cites the work of David Jasper and Cally Hammond. Here, there is high praise for Cranmer’s liturgical writing as being “pitch perfect”, but is the BCP “timeless”?

New analysis by the Tony Blair Institute, released today, highlights that changes to student migration must come hand-in-hand with funding reform. ADVERTISEMENTBut we are in an environment of great fiscal constraint: the state is spending more, taxing and borrowing more and yet failing to deliver better outcomes across the public sector. Yet across the public sector, AI offers the chance to break the hard link between quality, scale and headcount. ADVERTISEMENTOur analysis finds that existing AI tools alone could generate up to £8 billion a year in productivity gains for local government and as much as £40 billion across central government departments. If anything, universities have even more reason than other service sectors to embrace AI given the impact these tools will have in accelerating research and personalising the learner experiences.
