Army reservist visits Dutch battlefield where grandfather fought Nazis
Colour Sergeant James Gould, 51, who serves with 6th Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland (6 SCOTS), retraced the footsteps of his grandfather, Private Thomas Polson. His grandfather fought in the battle, but rarely spoke about it. He survived the Second World War and later worked in Edinburgh as a hairdresser, before his death in 1999. I’ve been working with the Royal Scots Museum, finding my great-grandad’s records, and now we’re piecing together how all these generations connect. It’s really quite special.”Mr Gould said revisiting the battleground where his grandfather fought gave him a sense of continuity.

Aldebugh fish and chip shop named among best in UK
Delicious magazine has compiled a list of the best places to get the ultimate coastal staple dish, and two places in Aldeburgh have been included. The Aldeburgh Fish and Chip shop and the Golden Galleon got the nod from the lifestyle magazine. "It’s more a case of choose your queue… The Golden Galleon has a sit-in restaurant, ‘The Upper Deck’, while Aldeburgh Fish & Chips is takeaway only." They are no stranger to national recognition after being named among the UK's best by The Times earlier this year. While the frying technology has been updated since opening, the recipe has remained the same and chips are still fried the traditional way in beef dripping.

Holkham Hall named among UK's best Christmas markets in 2025
The Independent published a list of the "only markets worth visiting" this winter - and the event based at Holkham Hall, near Wells, was among the 20 included. In 2024, Marlborough High Street was named one of the best in the UK by readers of The Times. Her boutique, Kim Vine has traded from its current location at 92 High Street for around 15 of those years and specialises in ladies' designer clothing. A tragedy during a fallow rut in the New Forest
A tragedy during the fallow rutOctober saw the annual fallow deer rut, or mating season, in the New Forest. Each species of deer has its own rituals and rather different timing, with the roe rutting being much earlier than the fallow. The fallow rut is a much more formal and communal process and it can be a very noisy one too, as the bucks “groan” continuously, sometimes for hours together. They include red, fallow and roe deer and amongst them is an example of two sets of locked antlers from fallow bucks found dead in Woodfidley Inclosure in 1904. A “do as you like” culture again seems to rule in the Forest and in other once quiet and beautiful places.

Sussex hotels ranked among UK’s most quirky by The Times
The Times recently announced the top 21 most quirky hotels to visit across the UK, with London-based hotels like The Rookery and Holmes Hotel making the list. However, if you fancy venturing out of the city, one of London’s neighbouring counties – Sussex – also came out strong on the list, with two hotels being featured in the lineup. Among them was The Old Railway Station in Petworth at number 17 and Amberley Castle coming in at number 11. Guests can sleep in beautifully restored Pullman carriages.
