Armed and hooded members of the Venezuelan security forces have surrounded Argentina’s embassy in Caracas, according to leaders of the country’s opposition. Six members of the opposition are currently taking refuge in the embassy, having fled there to escape a crackdown by Venezuelan authorities in the run-up to July’s presidential elections. Pedro Urruchurtu, who has been in the embassy since March and is the international coordinator for opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, wrote on X Saturday that armed hooded members of the National Police had closed off streets around the embassy. Omar Gonzalez, another opposition member living in the embassy, posted a video on X showing Venezuelan police outside the diplomatic building. Similar scenes took place in September, when Venezuelan security forces surrounded the Argentine embassy.

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump announced his choices to lead two of the country’s top public health agencies late Friday, as well as his pick for surgeon general. His biography says he “has published over 250 peer-reviewed scientific articles and has served on several editorial boards.”“Dr. Makary served in leadership at the World Health Organization Patient Safety Program and has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine,” according to his biography. “Dave has successfully worked with the CDC to enact a ban on patents for human embryos,” Trump said in a statement. Nesheiwat is the medical director at CityMD, which is a network of urgent care centers in New York and New Jersey.

WASHINGTON - ByteDance-owned TikTok chief executive officer Chew Shou Zi has sought input on US matters from Mr Elon Musk, a close adviser to President-elect Donald Trump, the Wall Street Journal reported on Nov 23, citing people familiar with the matter. Mr Chew initiated messages with the Tesla CEO in recent weeks and asked for his opinions on topics ranging from the incoming administration to potential tech policy, the report added. Mr Musk, TikTok, ByteDance and the Trump administration did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comments. ByteDance executives had been hedging their bets before the US election, meeting with people close to Trump and with people close to Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, the report added. Trump, who unsuccessfully tried to ban TikTok in 2020, has said if elected in November he would not allow TikTok to be barred.
