Participants at the meeting (Photo: VNA)Tokyo (VNA) - Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien and Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Yasutoshi Nishimura co-chaired the 5th meeting of the Vietnam-Japan Joint Committee on Cooperation in Industry, Trade and Energy in Tokyo on August 23. At the meeting, the two sides agreed on measures to strengthen regional and global supply chains, improve industrial competitiveness, promote cooperation in energy transformation towards carbon neutrality, and accelerate the progress of a number of important energy projects. Notably, the Japanese side agreed with Minister Dien’s proposal on Japan's continued support for Vietnam in training industrial human resources and improving industrial competitiveness, and the early signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in energy transformation to concretise projects to support Vietnam in energy transition with funding from the Asia Energy Transition Fund. Japan will also support training and share experience related to liquefied natural gas (LNG) with Vietnam. They reaffirmed the important role played by the joint committee mechanism, which was established in July 2015, in removing business difficulties and ensuring stable and continued growth of trade and investment./.

Vietnam is one of 13 countries where Asian elephants still live in the wild. The central highlands and southern region are the habitat of most elephants in Vietnam. Particularly, the Vietnam Administration of Forestry and Humane Society International has provided support for a project on protecting Asian elephants in the southern province of Dong Nai through solutions to reduce and prevent human-elephant conflict sustainably. According to the summary report of the General Department of Forestry, the number of elephants in Vietnam has reduced by 95%. In Dak Lak province alone, at least 23 wild elephants died in the period 2009-2016, accounting for about 25% of the total current herd./.

(Photo: VNA)There are plenty of opportunities for Vietnamese goods to enter South Africa and the regional countries, and for the two sides to boost business in multiple areas, Pham Thanh Hai, head of the Trade Office in South Africa, told Vietnam News Agency on August 19.South Africa has been the African country with the largest two-way trade volume with Vietnam, he said on the sidelines of a virtual meeting between Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Vietnamese trade offices overseas.The annual bilateral trade stood at over 1.3 billion USD, with Vietnam’s exports to South Africa exceeding 800 million USD and imports, nearly 500 million USD.Hai outlined three fields that the two countries should focus on in order to strengthen bilateral relations – trade of fruits, investment, and trade of fuel and materials.To boost fruit exports to South Africa, he advised Vietnamese exporters to pay more attention to processing and selling high value-added products, such as canned juices, dried fruits, jams, and fruit teas.Vietnam has imported a large volume of coal from South Africa as input for thermal power plants over the last several years, he said, adding that the Vietnam ese Ministry of Industry and Trade and the South African Department of Mineral Resources and Energy will sign a memorandum of understanding to enhance cooperation in mining in the coming time.He noted that it is the highest official agreement in mining between the two governments, expected to facilitate bilateral trade in mining and energy./.

The film by Japanese director Masako Sakata depicts the daily life of Tran Thi Hoan, a young woman born without legs and one of her hands as her mother had been exposed to the toxic chemical in a field during her pregnancy. It also features the difficulty of many other AO victims and a court battle in France by a former journalist against US chemical firms that manufactured AO used in the war. Sakata went to Vietnam in 2004 to learn about the consequences of the toxic chemical and made the first film on the matter. Her husband died nearly two decades ago as a result of his exposure to the AO during military service in Vietnam. In 2017, she received a Friendship Order from the President in recognition of her contribution to the movement “Action for the victims of Agent Orange in Vietnam”./.

The Swedish singer-songwriter Tamela Hedstrom collaborated with director Lê Quý Dương in composing a song inspired by the Vietnamese classic epic Lục Vân Tiê. The poem is written by the famous poet Nguyễn Đình Chiể in the early 1850s of the 19th century. Tamela shared that she thinks the poem is “beautiful and enthralling” after she read the English version of the piece. Therefore, Lục Vân Tiê inspired her to write a song lyrics that include features and details of the poem. The musician first performed her song in July of 2022 and she also is working on presenting the song Lục Vân Tiên to a wider audience in the near future.

Vietnam now has 123,000ha under tea trees, capable of producing 1,02 million tonnes of fresh tea buds. Vietnamese tea products are exported to 74 countries and territories, including Pakistan, China, Russia, and Indonesia. The shipments to China account for 15% of the country’s total export volume. In the first six months of this year, Vietnam shipped abroad 54,000 tonnes of tea, down 6.4% compared to the same period last year.
