Long Bien Bridge gets structural makeover after years of decay

Vietnamese films drowned out as 'Avatar 3' approaches $8 million mark
Released on December 19, Avatar 3 has consistently held the top spot at the box office. In just the last weekend, Avatar 3 earned 40.5 billion VND (about 1.66 million USD) across 9,252 screenings. Still, the animated hit’s total revenue in the Vietnamese market has already exceeded 213 billion VND (about 8.75 million USD). It's been a long time since two Hollywood films have simultaneously maintained their grip on the top two positions in Vietnam’s box office with such commanding numbers. Anaconda: Clash of the Super Python earned just 2.2 billion VND (about 90,000 USD), placing fourth, while the animated film SpongeBob and the Pirate’s Curse brought in 1.4 billion VND (roughly 57,000 USD), ranking fifth.

Free bus and metro rides in HCMC on New Year’s Day
HCMC residents will be able to ride buses and the metro for free on New Year’s Day. Railway sector adds 20,000 seats for four-day New Year holiday
To meet rising travel demand during the four-day New Year 2026 holiday from January 1 to 4, Vietnam Railways will operate additional passenger trains and attach extra carriages to existing services, providing a total of 20,000 extra seats. According to the operator, around 13,400 seats will come from supplementary services on key routes. New decree offers supplemental pension for retirement security
The draft decree on supplemental pension insurance (SPI) is currently being developed by the Ministry of Finance for the Social Insurance Law 2024. Under the draft decree, eligible participants for SPI include employers and employees who are already participating in mandatory social insurance as prescribed by the Social Insurance Law. They are entitled to receive supplemental pension payments and enjoy personal income tax incentives as prescribed by law. Vietnam has piloted voluntary supplemental pension funds since 2017 under Decree 88/2016/ND-CP. By the end of 2024, there were seven active supplemental pension funds in the system; total assets reached VND1,549 billion, an 18-fold increase compared to 2021 and up 68.7 percent compared to 2023.

Vietnam indefinitely halts Bach Ma Mountain tourism after severe landslides
The road leading to the peak of Bach Ma in Hue was severely damaged by landslides at kilometer 12 after historic flooding in late October 2025. On December 26, Nguyen Vu Linh, director of Bach Ma National Park, said authorities have yet to begin repairs on the landslide-hit road connecting National Route 1 to the park’s summit. At Bach Ma, the recorded rainfall at times exceeded 1,700 mm, the highest level ever observed in Vietnam’s meteorological history and the second-highest globally. A landslide cuts off a forest patrol road at Bach Ma National Park, following historic flooding in late October 2025. The city’s construction department has conducted on-site surveys and is assessing repair options, Linh said, adding that tourism to the Bach Ma summit will remain suspended until restoration work is completed.

2025 Golden Ball winners announced
HCM City (VNA) – Nguyen Hoang Duc and Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy were voted Best Player of 2025 and received their Golden Ball statue at an awarding ceremony held in Ho Chi Minh City on December 26. He also pocketed the Most Favourite Player award after many national supporters decided to tick his name in the voting chart. The women's Golden Ball went to midfielder Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy of Thai Nguyen T&T, who overcame striker Pham Thi Hai Yen of Hanoi and midfielder Tran Thi Thuy Trang of HCM City. The Devotion award, which was a new in this year’s vote, was given to former national midfielder Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung of Phong Phu Ha Nam. The Vietnam Golden Ball award is the most prestigious individual football award in Vietnam, organised by the Sai Gon Giai Phong (Liberated Saigon) Newspaper since 1995.

Vietnam’s aviation industry soars beyond pre-pandemic peak
Compared with 2019, the pre-pandemic peak year, the size of Vietnam’s aviation market has now grown substantially in every measure. The most impressive progress came from international aviation. In 2025, Vietnam served 46.6 million international passengers, up 12.6% year-on-year, while international cargo rose to 1.3 million tons, up 22.6%. Vietnamese carriers now operate 113 international routes, strengthening the country’s position as a major aviation hub in the Asia-Pacific region. Forecasts project nearly 95 million passengers and 1.6 million tons of cargo in 2026 - up 13.6% and 9.3% respectively from 2025.
