A six-year drought has imperiled the country's entire agriculture sector, including farmers who grow cereals and grains used to feed humans and livestock. Belhoussni's plight is familiar to grain farmers throughout the world confronting a hotter and drier future. Climate change is imperiling the food supply and, in regions like North Africa, shrinking the annual yields of cereals that dominate diets around the world — wheat, rice, maize and barley. The organization has advised farmers on seeding, irrigation and drought mitigation as less rain falls and less water flows through Morocco's rivers. The amount of land seeded has dramatically shrunk as well, from 36,700 square kilometers to 9,540 square miles 24,700 square kilometers.

JOHANNESBURG, JULY 27: A record drought that has devastated crops across southern Africa, causing millions of people to go hungry and pushing 5 countries to declare a national disaster, is entering its worst stage, the UN has warned. “The worst period comes now”, WFP’s Acting Regional Director for southern Africa, Lola Castro, told AFP in an interview. According to some estimates, the drought is the worst to hit the region in 100 years, she said. “When you go now to rural productive areas of Southern Africa, what you see is a devastated scenario”, she said. It has so far received about $200 million, Castro said.

The slender-horned rhim gazelles, which are native to North Africa, have become an endangered species (Mahmud Turkia)Cocooned in white bags and nestled in the arms of volunteers, eight young rhim gazelles -- an endangered species native to North Africa -- have been transferred to an uninhabited Libyan island. Environmentalist hope their new home on Farwa island, near Tunisia, will be a haven for the vulnerable animal. As soon as they were released, the young gazelles took off frolicking before promptly disappearing behind the island's wild bushes. Farwa, though not their natural habitat, seems to have suited the first group of gazelles released on the island, Youssef Gandouz, an environmental activist, told AFP. "The vegetation on Farwa is sufficient" for the survival of rhim gazelles, said Ftess, and Gandouz added the narrow island "is now a safe haven where turtles and migratory birds can nest and feed".

Mali's army and its Russian allies suffered a major setback and significant losses on Saturday while fighting separatists in the country's north, a spokesman for the rebels told AFP. "The Malian army has retreated," a local politician told AFP, citing at least 17 dead in a provisional toll. The army and Wagner are no longer there," he said, referring to the Russian mercenary group. Mossa Ag Inzoma, a member of the separatist movement, claimed that "dozens and dozens" of Wagner fighters and soldiers had been killed and taken prisoner. A junta led by Colonel Assimi Goita took power in 2022 and broke the country's traditional alliance with France, in favor of Russia.

In Sudan, at least 22 people were killed when the rebel paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked the city of al-Fashir, a pro-democracy activist group said on Saturday, the worst toll after weeks of stalemate on that front in the country’s civil war. The city is the national army’s last remaining position inthe Darfur region of Sudan and a key front in the war with the RSF that has turned Sudan into the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. The activist group said it had counted 22 bodies and thecasualty toll was expected to rise. The passports were recovered in Omdurman, north of Khartoum, which was recently retaken from the RSF by the Sudanese national army. Some of this support reportedly includes thermobaric bombs being dropped on various targets by drones.

For North Africa, crisis is actually goodHafed Al-GhwellPolitical elite in North Africa have found crises that plague the world to be beneficial for their governments. While Algeria’s government faced criticism for clamping down on journalists and activists, the indispensable role it has played in European energy security has resulted in increased Western favor. In Tunisia, President Kais Saied continues to exploit an escalating migration crisis to increase his political leverage. The turbulent global environment is providing North African countries with substantial geopolitical currency. Furthermore, Libya’s borders have become a conduit for sprawling illicit economies, which are magnifying the ramifications of the migrant crisis.

South Korea on Saturday expressed disappointment after its athletes were incorrectly introduced as North Korean at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics. The South Korean Sports ministry expressed “regret over the announcement during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics". The Speaker repeated the same introduction for the North Korean delegation. The Sports Ministry has also directed the foreign ministry to “deliver a strong protest to the French side” on the matter. The blunder comes at a time when ties between North Korea and South Korea have hit a new low with North strengthening its military ties with Russia and South sending K-pop and anti-regime messages via border loudspeakers and conducting live-fire exercises on border islands.
