According to NPR, tech companies collectively laid off approximately 25,000 employees during the first four weeks of this year. I know all too well how costly it can be to lose long-term, loyal staff due to extreme circumstances. Like countless other companies and not-for-profits, my charitable organisation had no choice but to lay off staff in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. A company constantly cutting and adding jobs cannot effectively maintain these relationships or conduct effective, long-term business planning. This trend is not surprising given that so many employees are worried they could be cut at any moment.

The North Korean government has reportedly made plans to strengthen security of its mobile network by the end of this year by ditching Chinese telecoms equipment – just months after deploying it. According to the Daily NK website, citing an anonymous source, the plan emerged in the wake of a conference of information and communication experts in Pyongyang last month to discuss upgrading the national mobile network. At the conference, some attendees argued that the current network is vulnerable to cyber attacks “due to its reliance on Chinese technology and equipment”. The plan aligns with the government’s overall goal of increasing self-reliance and beefing up security systems to not only repel external threats, but also strengthen internal supervision and control, the report added. While the plan is said to have wide support from the government, some experts have reportedly expressed concern that the timeline for achieving this by the end of the year may not be realistic.

A war is looming in Lebanon. For months, Israel and Hizbullah have traded drones, rockets and missiles (see charts). It would be the most intense conflict in the region in decades—a calamity for Israel and a disaster for Lebanon. American and European diplomats continue to shuttle between Israel and Lebanon, hoping, with less and less optimism, to persuade Hizbullah to withdraw 7-10km away from the border. Even then, the result would be a tenuous peace at best, with the threat of cross-border raids by Hizbullah on Israel dissuading many Israelis from returning.

An international research seminar on the theme of “territorial autonomy: the promotion of foreign direct investment”, held in New York Monday provided a platform to compare the Morocco-proposed Autonomy Initiative for the Sahara region with other autonomy experiences in the world, particularly with regard to the promotion of foreign direct investments in the autonomous regions and enhancement of economic development of local populations. It was attended by around fifty diplomats, including several ambassadors in New York, senior UN officials and media accredited to the United Nations. The Moroccan Autonomy initiative offers more power and prerogatives to local authorities and to the local population, they outlined. According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, they recalled, Morocco is the 9th country that attracted the most foreign direct investment in Africa, in 2021. The ambassador also cited the support of more than 18 European countries for the Moroccan initiative, 15 of which are members of the European Union, which proves the credibility and seriousness of the Moroccan Autonomy initiative and thus enhanced the Moroccan Sahara’s standing as an economic engine and a privileged hub in West Africa and the transatlantic space.
