Record temperatures already reached in recent days are suspected to have caused hundreds if not thousands of deaths across Asia and Europe. As many as 52 bodies were brought to hospitals in the past two days, The Times of India reported on Thursday, adding that most of them were poor people who lived and worked in the open. Out of around 150,000 pilgrims, Pakistan has so far recorded 58 deaths, a diplomat briefed on the tally told AFP. Indonesia, which had around 240,000 pilgrims, raised its death toll to 183, according to the religious affairs ministry, compared with 313 deaths recorded last year. Deaths have also been confirmed by Malaysia, India, Jordan, Iran, Senegal, Tunisia, Sudan and Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region.

His comments come after South Korea says it will consider supplying arms to Ukraine after Russia and North Korea signed a mutual defence deal. President Vladimir Putin said that Russia might supply weapons to North Korea in what he suggested would be a mirror response to the Western arming of Ukraine. In his latest comments, he said North Korea could be one such recipient of Russian arms. Taking into account our agreements with [North Korea], I do not exclude this either,” he said. There’s ongoing debate on how strong of a security commitment the deal between Russia and North Korea entails.

New research from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis shows that investing in a coal-to-clean transition transaction, rather than punting purely the decommissioning of coal plants, presents a compelling value proposition. The Institute researched coal power plants around the world and found that renewable energy asset profit margins can be more than enough to pay the cost of closing a coal plant while still generating a profit for the power facility’s operator, under specific circumstances. New coal capacity in sub-Saharan Africa is decreasingRecasting decommissioning of coal plants as a financial opportunityAs the Institute research discovered, only 215GW (approximately 10%) of existing coal power capacity is slated for decommissioning by 2030. Few of the initiatives to decommission coal power target dates before 2030. Nigeria should brace for tough times ahead in the fight against terrorism as armed groups relocate from northern Benin to its north, a report warned. Armed extremists are increasingly settling in Kainji Lake National Park, one of Nigeria’s largest, where other armed groups have also gained access, the Clingendael Institute think tank said in a report. Violent extremist groups, some of them affiliated to Al Qaeda, are taking advantage of loose Nigerian security in the north western region, the report mentions. As military rulers continue to crackdown on armed banditry and extremist groups in the Sahel, many groups head south to northern Benin or northern Nigeria to engage in banditry as they also find fertile ground for recruitment among the poverty-stricken communities. “A link between Lake Chad and the Sahel is a major opportunity for al-Qaida and the Islamic State to boast about their profiles as leaders of global jihad,” the report said.

The economic growth across Africa is projected to exceed global average this year, according to a new report published by the Afreximbank, despite several downside risks, including increasing levels of sovereign debt, associated sustainability risks, and excessive exposure to adverse terms-of-trade shocks. The report entitled ‘A Resilient Africa: Delivering Growth in a Turbulent World’, the lender says that African economies will grow on average by 3.8% in 2024 slightly outpacing the predicted global growth of 3.2%, whereby the growth is expected to maintain the upward curve reaching 4% in 2025. The report says that, overall, the outlook for the African continent this year remains positive despite the challenging economic environment last year. Despite some potential risks, including escalating geopolitical tensions, volatile domestic political environments, high commodity prices and inflationary pressures, and potential food insecurity, most macroeconomic indicators are expected to improve in 2024 and 2025. “Our analysis in the report also revealed large untapped potential in intra-African trade, especially in machinery, electricity, motor vehicles, and food products.”
