Africa has the potential to increase its freshwater fishery output by at least 1 million metric tons (MT) annually by reviewing current regulations on harvesting, according to a new report. “Developing the potential of inland fisheries is a major challenge but can also be viewed as an opportunity to meet Africa’s growing need for fish and, hence, better nutrition,” the report said. Conversely, the conventional single-species fisheries management approach that most fisheries in Africa take to harvesting has, for decades, failed to “prevent overfishing, lacking control over the continuous increase in fishing capacity or the technological developments that went with it,” according to the report. “Conventional fisheries management [also] fails to take into account the interactions between species and that the structure of ecosystems, by focusing heavily on target selectivity, has been severely impacted despite all the conservation measures implemented,” the report said. To warm the industry up to the new approach, the report recommends educational programs targeting such stakeholders as fishery managers, tourism fishing captains, conservationists, and civil society organizations on the principles of balanced harvesting.

This frustrating experience, he said, “felt very off,” and planted the initial seed for what would become Chowdeck. Shortly after, Akuko was on a work trip in Dubai, a country with a more developed food delivery scene. He was so impressed with the on-demand delivery services available, that he knew he had to replicate it in Nigeria. Indeed, by the end of 2023, Jumia Food and Bolt Food had exited the Nigerian market, leaving Glovo as Chowdeck’s main competition. Beyond food delivery, we have expanded our services to include groceries, pharmaceutical products and more.

The latest weather maps indicate that the UK could soon be enjoying its first 29C heatwave of the year. With peak temperatures barely exceeding 25C, there has been no sign of sustained hot weather hitting the UK. However, a North African plume could hit the country before the end of the month. Counties such as Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Greater London, Surrey, and Berkshire are due to experience highs of 28C. The Met Office's long-range forecast doesn't hint at a heatwave, but it does suggest temperatures are set to rise.

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of South Africa – a good measure of the health of the country’s economy – shrank slightly by 0.1% in the first quarter of 2024. In their review, TIPS said this economic volatility resulted, in part, from extraordinary fluctuations in world mining prices and shortfalls in South African infrastructure. The private sector has been quick to provide alternatives to Eskom and Transnet, mitigating the impacts on growth. In part, their struggles reflected the decline in Eskom and Transnet capacity over the previous decade. TIPS said that a sharp fall in manufacturing sales over the first quarter of 2024 contributed to slow overall growth.
