Police intelligence identifies an “unlimited” supply of vulnerable child labour trafficked from north Africa to work for Europe’s top-tier cocaine networks. Investigators looking into the mass recruitment of minors by cocaine networks in Belgium quickly realised their modus operandi was being replicated throughout Europe. Belgium’s children’s rights commissioner Caroline Vrijens describes boys such as Youssef as “the most vulnerable” minors on the continent. A separate police operation will soon be announced to tackle the trafficking of African children into Europe’s cocaine cartels. Garbar warns that failure to assimilate such vulnerable children will end with Europe paying a high price.

Aircraft carrying Malawi vice-president goes missingIn a speech late on Monday, President Lazarus Chakwera said a search and rescue operation was continuing. The plane was supposed to land at Mzuzu International Airport, in the country’s north, just after 10:00 local time (09:00 BST). The Malawi Defence Force aircraft "went off the radar" after it left the capital, Lilongwe, on Monday morning, it added. An aircraft carrying Malawi's Vice-President Saulos Chilima and nine others has gone missing, a statement from the president's office has said. The reason for the aircraft's disappearance is not yet known, Gen Valentino Phiri told Mr Chakwera.

Intel pauses plan to build $25B Israeli factory
Intel reportedly suspended plans to establish a $25 billion chipmaking facility in Israel, a decision the company claimed was due to changing project timelines and market dynamics. According to local outlet Calcalistech, Intel’s suppliers in the country have received notice of cancellation of contracts for the provision of equipment needed to build the new factory, a plan agreed by the chipmaker and the Israeli government in December 2023. Intel and the Israeli government previously earmarked 2028 for the factory’s launch. Intel apparently added it remains committed to the market, which it brands as one of its key manufacturing and R&D sites. In 2023, Intel pumped a $300 million investment into Israel-based Tower Semiconductor, after a proposed merger between the pair fell through.

South Korea Fires Warning Shots After North Korean Soldiers Briefly Cross Border

"After our military issued warning broadcasts and warning shots, they retreated northward," it said, adding the incident happened June 9. "Apart from the immediate retreat of the North Korean soldiers following our warning shots, there were no unusual movements observed", the JCS said, adding the military was closely monitoring troops near the border. South Korea's military said Monday it had detected signs the North was installing its own loudspeakers. The 2018 pact was a hallmark achievement of former president Moon Jae-in, who met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un repeatedly in a bid to improve ties.

Russian grain exporters see growth potential in India and China
MOSCOW: Russian grain exporters see potential to increase supplies of pulses and cereals to India and China while continuing to focus on their traditional markets in the Middle East and North Africa, the agriculture ministry said on Tuesday.Turkey 's decision to halt wheat imports will not affect the level of Russian exports, it said in a statement following talks between Agriculture Minister Oksana Lut and grain exporters. "In the current environment, domestic exporters will focus on the key markets of the Middle East and North Africa, as well as on developing relations with India and China, where there is progress in the supply of pulses and broad prospects for grain crops. For us, by and large, given that the harvest will be significantly lower than the last two years, it will not have any negative impact. Egypt ranked first, Bangladesh third, with Pakistan and Algeria also in the top five importers. Grain supplies to Turkey fell by 23% on last season, reaching 6.5 million tons at the end of May.

Egyptian bill payment startup Sahl raises $6m funding round
Cairo-based startup Sahl has raised US$6 million in Series A and seed funding to act as a one-stop shop for household bills, in collaboration with government entities. Sahl is a mobile bill payment app that offers users the convenience of paying bills for over 50 services including electricity, gas, water, and mobile. The startup has also launched B2B products to expand its audience by offering utility services and payment acceptance to other companies. Sahl’s US$6 million funding round was led by Ayady for Investment and Development, a leading Egyptian investment firm, with participation from existing investors Egypt Pay, Delta Electronic Systems, and E-Finance. Fueled by the recent round of funding, Sahl is set to evolve into a comprehensive financial services provider.

Africa: Not just about migration
Europe’s Africa policy was greatly affected by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, especially as energy and food supply became weaponised as a Russian tool of aggression. In response, stronger bilateral, regional, and multilateral cooperation is needed between African organisations and countries and Western actors. Both parties should continue to accelerate existing objectives, like the 2030 Agenda, debt, sustainable development, health security, energy independence, political instability, and democracy and human rights. All these priorities, if well implemented through the G7 mandate, could also help Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni to finally succeed in tackling migration through a multilateral approach rather than a purely domestic one. In this episode, Elisabeth Sidiropoulos, chief executive of the South African Institute for International Affairs, and Maddalena Procopio, senior policy fellow at ECFR’s Africa programme, discuss how Meloni could advance her policy ideas on Africa through the G7 presidency.
