South Africa’s ANC loses 30-year parliamentary majority after election
Opposition parties have hailed the result as a momentous breakthrough for a country struggling with deep poverty and inequality, but the ANC remained the biggest party by some way. “The way to rescue South Africa is to break the ANC’s majority and we have done that,” said main opposition leader John Steenhuisen. The final results are still to be formally declared by the independent Electoral Commission that ran the election, but the ANC cannot pass 50 percent. But he will be weakened and could face calls to quit both from opposition parties and critics in the deeply divided ANC. On Friday, however, a top ANC official backed him to stay on as party leader, and analysts say he has no obvious successor.

North Korea sends balloons with trash into South, again
SEOUL: North Korea again sent trash-carrying balloons into the South on Saturday, the South Korean military said, a day after Seoul warned of countermeasures against such activity. Earlier this week, North Korea sent around 260 balloons carrying bags of trash, including waste batteries, cigarette butts and what appeared to be manure, according to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff. North Korea is “once again floating balloons carrying waste toward the South”, the JCS said in a text message to reporters. North Korea has long been infuriated by the balloons sent by South Korean activists, which carry anti-Pyongyang leaflets. South Korean defence minister Shin Won-sik on Saturday said North Korea sending balloons with waste was “unimaginably petty and low-grade behaviour”.

South Africa election: Mandela’s ANC loses 30-year parliamentary majority
South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) party is projected to lose its parliamentary majority after 30 years with more than 99 percent of votes counted on Saturday in the historic election. ANC received about 40 percent vote in Wednesday’s election, leaving them short of the majority it had held since the famed all-race vote of 1994 that ended apartheid and brought it to power under Nelson Mandela. The ANC will be forced to form a coalition to govern South Africa. The final results are still to be formally declared by the independent Electoral Commission that ran the election, but the ANC cannot pass 50 per cent according to projections. The ANC swept to power in 1994 on a pledge to “build a better life for all,” winning almost 63% of the vote in the country’s first democratic election.

African Lion 2024 exercise wraps up – The North Africa Post
The combined Moroccan-American exercise “African Lion 2024” wrapped up on Friday at Cap Draa (north of Tan-Tan), with air and ground military maneuvers involving units from the Moroccan and US armed forces. General Langley told the press after the air and ground maneuvers that Exercise African Lion is a pioneering multinational exercise that facilitates regional cooperation and partnerships between the various participants. He added that this year is very special as it marks the 20th anniversary of the “African Lion” exercise involving Moroccan and international partners to establish constructive regional cooperation and reinforce mutual support. Colonel Mike Weinsman, of the US forces, said that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the African Lion exercise, which began as a small exercise between Morocco and the United States and has now become the largest maneuver on the African continent. The program for the 20th edition of the “African Lion 2024” exercise included joint land, sea and air tactical exercises, both day and night, a Special Forces Exercise and operations for airborne forces, as well as a “Task Force” operational planning exercise.

Amazighs call on South African president to take ‘Algerian generals’ to ICC
As the Algerian journalist and opposition activist Hichem Aboud, author of the best-seller ‘LA MAFIA DES GENERAUX’, pointed out in one of his videos on 20 May, referring to these ‘unscrupulous generals’: ‘Algeria has no project. In this regard, we would very much welcome a similar initiative against the ‘Algerian generals’ who continue to violate human rights, murder opponents and pursue a policy of anti-Amazigh apartheid, repressing the ‘Amazigh’ communities in Algeria for decades. They even dared to assassinate a president who was going to turn Algeria around, in this case Mohamed Boudiaf. Let us not forget that the day after Algerian independence, President Ahmed Ben Bella declared in his speech of 5 October 1962: ‘We are Arabs, Arabs, ten million Arabs’. If our friend Hichem Aboud claims that the Algerian generals have no plan, we can affirm the opposite.

John English, Jim Miller and John Wadland – all retired university professors – were born when their fathers were at war against the Axis powers. At the time of his enlistment in 1942, he was married to a fellow Scot named Isabella Rodger, and they’d had one child: a son, John.
