Algeria’s state-owned energy firm Sonatrach expects to sign in the coming days an agreement with Chevron that is set to boost the country’s natural gas production, Algerian Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab has said. Algeria, the North African OPEC producer, is looking to raise its natural gas production and exports and will remain a key provider of gas to Europe, the minister said. Last week, the other U.S. supermajor, ExxonMobil, signed an agreement with the Algerian government for exploration at two natural gas fields in the North African country. Algeria holds huge conventional natural gas reserves, and it is also estimated to have the third–largest shale gas reserves in the world after China and Argentina. Most of Algeria’s gas exports are heading to Europe, which is increasingly betting on Africa to import large volumes of pipeline gas and LNG to replace pipeline gas supply from Russia, which was Europe’s top gas supplier before the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In a remarkable breakthrough, a rare discovery in Florida has shed new light on the evolutionary timeline of North America’s solitary porcupine species. Evolutionary puzzle of North America’s porcupineFor years, the evolutionary history of North America’s lone porcupine has puzzled scientists. While Central and South America boast 16 porcupine species, North America has just one. Their journey to South America is marked as a significant event in mammalian history, occurring when the continents of Africa and South America were much closer together, possibly involving rafting across oceans. Ancient origins of North America’s porcupinesThe analysis of the Florida skeleton highlighted both similarities and differences with modern North American porcupines, suggesting a complex evolutionary history that predates the formation of the Isthmus of Panama.

Morocco expects to further cut its fiscal deficit from 4% in 2024 to 3.5% in 2025 and 3% in 2026, despite an increase in spending on social protection, Fouzi Lekjaa said. Increased spending on social protection would be funded by an increase in government’s revenue, he said. In three years, the government, mainly through taxes, mobilized an additional 100 billion dirhams, he said, citing reforms of the corporate and value added taxes. The government spent 9 billion dirhams to help the electricity operator keep prices stable, he said. These reforms meant that Morocco would not resort to foreign debt to fund its social protection plan and that debt would decrease to less than 70% in 2026 from 72.2% in 2021, Lekjaa said.

South Korea and US condemn launch and urge Pyongyang to ‘refrain from further unlawful and destabilising acts’. North Korea has launched multiple short-range ballistic missiles, South Korea’s military said, as it continues to develop its military weaponry in breach of international sanctions. The United States, a close ally of South Korea, condemned the launch with the Indo-Pacific Command urging North Korea to “refrain from further unlawful and destabilising acts.”Pyongyang is banned from testing ballistic missiles under United Nations sanctions imposed over its nuclear programme. The adoption of the EU’s pact on migration and asylum has left Italy's leaders and opposition parties so divided. ADVERTISEMENTGiorgia Meloni’s key challenge has been to curb illegal migration, since becoming Italy’s prime minister in 2022. However, delivering on the main promise of her political programme has been particularly difficult given the sharp increase in the number of arrivals from North Africa since the beginning of her mandate. As she launched her Brothers of Italy party's campaign before upcoming European elections, she took credit for changing Europe’s approach to migration. Official data for the first three months of 2024 shows the number of arrivals has decreased by more than half compared to the same period last year.
