The Europeans' muted tone aims to avoid reigniting disagreements with Washington on other issues, primarily the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. The American plan is said to have taken some of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's demands into account, regarding the absence of explicit concessions over Donbas and proposing the establishment of demilitarized industrial zones. Europeans also managed to persuade Trump to provide "strong security guarantees" for Ukraine, ensuring that there will be no further Russian attacks after signing a peace agreement. This coalition is supposed to include countries ready to contribute to providing security guarantees to Ukraine and even establish a multinational force to monitor the potential ceasefire. In the Middle East, the U.S. focus on Venezuela has impacted efforts to advance the American plan for Gaza from its first to second phase.

The order came during an inspection visit by Burhan, chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, to the prison west of the capital Khartoum. In a post on X, Burhan announced he had directed authorities to free the women immediately, noting the group included mothers detained with their children. Situated along the strategic Gulf of Aden, Somaliland offers Israel a critical diplomatic foothold in the Horn of Africa. But beyond ports, shipping lanes, and intelligence cooperation lies another, largely overlooked dimension of this emerging relationship: Jewish history. Long before the two countries recognized each other, Jews were already present in Somaliland, leaving behind traces that still whisper to us across the centuries. Yet the most intriguing dimension of Somaliland’s Jewish history is not found in ruins or place names but in people: specifically, the Yibir tribe. But beneath this social function lies a striking claim: Widespread Somali tradition holds that the Yibir are of Jewish origin.

North Korea accused the South on Saturday of flying another drone over its territory this month for the purpose of spying, a claim that Seoul denied. The North Korean military tracked a drone "moving northwards" over the South Korean border county of Ganghwa in early January before shooting it down near the North Korean city of Kaesong, a spokesperson said in a statement carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). South Korean President Lee Jae Myung had ordered an investigation, the defence ministry said. Located northwest of Seoul, Ganghwa County is one of the closest South Korean territories to North Korea. Its military spokesperson said the alleged incursion was similar to one in September when the South flew drones near its border city of Paju.

The 773,000-year-old fossils, including three partial lower jaws, several vertebrae, and teeth, were discovered in a cave in Morocco’s Thomas Quarry. They have some characteristics of Homo erectus, which evolved in Africa some two million years ago. Some Homo erectus groups migrated out of Africa, and reached Europe about 800,000 years ago. Those in Spain, known as Homo antecessor, are thought to be direct ancestors of Neanderthals. Yet, he explained, these newly found fossils are distinct from both Homo erectus and Homo antecessor.
