Attacks by Sudan's army and its paramilitary foes on two towns in the western Darfur region over the past week have killed 114 people, medical sources told AFP Sunday. A medical source reported Sunday that 51 people were killed the day before in drone strikes attributed to the army on the North Darfur town of Al-Zuruq, 180 kilometres (112 miles) north of the RSF-overrun state capital El-Fashir. "Two of the Daglo family were killed, Moussa Saleh Daglo and Awad Moussa Saleh Daglo," an eyewitness to the burial told AFP. Much of the worst fighting has been in Darfur, reviving memories of mass ethnic atrocities committed in the 2000s by the Janjaweed, the RSF's predecessor. Drone strikes on North Kordofan capital El-Obeid caused a power outage, the national electricity company said.

Seoul's defence ministry said it had detected "several projectiles, presumed to be ballistic missiles" fired from near the North Korean capital Pyongyang around 7:50am (2250 GMT Saturday). It is Pyongyang's first ballistic missile launch since November, when it staged a test after US President Donald Trump approved South Korea's plan to build a nuclear-powered submarine. "The underlying message is likely that attacking North Korea would not be as easy as a strike on Venezuela," he said. A former senior North Korean diplomat said Pyongyang should learn from the US operation to detain Maduro. Lee hopes to possibly harness China's clout over North Korea to support his bid to improve ties with Pyongyang.

El Bilal Toure scored the winning spot-kick as a 10-man Mali beat Tunisia 3-2 on penalties to reach the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals after their last-16 tie had finished 1-1 at the end of extra time. Lassine Sinayoko converted from the spot to take the tie to extra time and, eventually, on to the decisive shootout. Captain Yves Bissouma, the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, blazed Mali’s first kick over the bar, but Ali Abdi then missed for Tunisia before Eagles goalkeeper Djigui Diarra saved two further penalties and Toure won it. Tom Saintfiet’s Mali advanced to a quarterfinal next Friday in Tangier against West African neighbours Senegal, after the 2022 champions came from behind to beat Sudan 3-1 earlier. A penalty shootout appeared inevitable, and so it transpired, with Bissouma and Nene Dorgeles failing from the spot for Mali.

Natural gas is poised to reshape Africa’s future, offering transformative pathways for countries to earn export revenues and achieve domestic industrialization. Africa’s new gas frontier will be dominated by Nigeria’s “Decade of Gas,” Senegal-Mauritania’s cross-border hubs, Mozambique’s FLNG buildout, and Tanzania’s long-awaited LNG framework. GTA holds significant gas reserves, estimated at over 15 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of potentially recoverable gas, with some estimates putting the total basin resource potential even higher. With a 26.5% stake, Total is the main operator of the $20B LNG project, making it Africa’s largest private investment. This potential is primarily centered around the planned Likong'o-Mchinga Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project, which aims to position the country as a major global LNG exporter.
