By Euronews with APThe unusually strong solar storm hitting Earth produced stunning displays of colour in the skies across the Northern Hemisphere early Saturday. The effects of the Northern Lights, which were prominently on display in the UK, were due to last through the weekend and possibly into next week. Chen Shuo/XinhuaFriday's storm is the first severe geomagnetic storm watch NOAA has issued since 2005. The most intense solar storm in recorded history, in 1859, prompted auroras in central America. The flares seem to be associated with a sunspot that’s 16 times the diametre of Earth, NOAA said.

Walker soon broke down in tears while talking to DeCosta and continued crying as he spoke with Ravens coach John Harbaugh. Walker, the 19th wide receiver taken in this year's draft, has the potential to be Jackson's No. North Carolina coach Mack Brown blasted the decision, telling the NCAA "shame on you." [I'd] probably be [undrafted] or coming back [to North Carolina]; I didn't really know at that point, but that was pretty much my mindset. "It's no bad blood between me and the NCAA," Walker said after being the 113th player taken in this year's draft.

The forecast for a powerful geomagnetic storm on Friday panned out as anticipated, and then some, with magnificent showings of the northern lights that stretched across the skies over North America. SEE ALSO: Blackout-causing 'super' solar storms happen more often than we thoughtThe G5 rating on geomagnetic storm scale is an extreme disturbance of Earth’s magnetic field. That storm had ample cloud cover across Canada with a low-pressure system moving through the Great Lakes, limiting the northern lights visibility in parts of the country. At 9, that means auroras were visible across the southern United States, with the state of Florida even witnessing the northern lights in cities like Key Largo and Tallahassee. The northern lights were also highly visible in the Southern Hemisphere, including New Zealand, Australia, and Tasmania.

Auroras might be seen as far south as Alabama later Saturday, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center. The Space Weather Prediction Center, a division of the National Weather Service, observed conditions of an extreme geomagnetic storm at 6:54 p.m. Previously, the center issued a geomagnetic storm watch on Thursday evening, the first such watch issued since January 2005. “The extreme geomagnetic storm continues and will persist through at least Sunday.”The storm could affect the power grid as well as satellite and high-frequency radio communications. That’s pretty awesome.
