State Rep. Greg Markkanen introduced a bill on Wednesday to rename a section of M-26 in Houghton County as the Private Wesley Karna Memorial Highway. Karna served his country bravely in its time of greatest need,” Markkanen said. In April 1944, at the age of 21 years, Karna was a private in Company F, 362nd Regiment of the 91st U.S. Infantry Division. Karna was a member of Company F, 2nd Battalion, 362nd Infantry Regiment, 91st Division, II Corps, Fifth U.S. Army. He is buried in Mountain View Cemetery, in South Range, on the same street where he grew up.

Algeria: Five years after Hirak protest movement repressive clampdown continues unabated
After the Hirak protest movement was halted due to Covid-19 in 2020, the Algerian authorities escalated their repression of peaceful dissent. Dozens of peaceful protesters, journalists, activists, and human rights defenders continue to languish behind bars for criticizing the authorities. They must ensure that human rights defenders, journalists, activists, trade unionists and others are able to exercise their rights and freely express critical views without fear of reprisals. “Algeria’s authorities must make the five-year anniversary of the Hirak protest movement a turning point by putting an end to this climate of repression and ordering the immediate release of those arbitrarily detained and allowing peaceful protests. According to the CNLD, the Algerian authorities have released another 107 detainees linked to the Hirak since January 2023.

Burden of colorectal cancer and its risk factors in the North Africa and Middle East (NAME) region, 1990–2019: a systematic analysis of the global burden of disease study
GBD risk factors estimation was performed in a six-step risk assessment framework. We also considered another risk factor as remaining which refers to CRC DALYs related to undetermined and non-modifiable risk factors such as genetic susceptibility. Like the global, the main contributing risk factors were dietary risk (33.18%), low whole grain intake (19.79%), and low intake of milk (15.77%). These behavioral modifications consequently can improve metabolic risk factors, such as elevated BMI and FPG. Second, the collinearity between various risk factors or healthy behaviors with each other may cause an overestimation of the real effect sizes.

Spain to invest €45 billion in Morocco by 2050 – The North Africa Post
Spain is planning to invest 45 billion euros in Morocco by 2050 in various projects, said Spanish Prime minister Pedro Sanchez at a press conference held Wednesday in Rabat at the end of his working visit to the North African Kingdom. “Spain is a key partner for Morocco with €45 billion investment planned by 2050”, said Sanchez, lauding the “positive evolution” of trade between the two neighboring countries. Moroccan-Spanish economic partnership will be strengthened further with the organization by the two countries along with Portugal of the FIFA 2030 World Cup, said the Prime Minister. Spain is Morocco’s largest trading partner while Morocco is the third largest trading partner for Spain outside the EU, right after the US and the UK. Israel bombards Gaza’s Rafah as ground offensive looms
More than four months of relentless attacks by land, air and sea have flattened much of the Gaza Strip, pushing its population of 2.3 million to the brink of famine, according to the United Nations. International concern has in recent weeks centred on Rafah, where a ground invasion could displace hundreds of thousands of Palestinians across the frontier with Egypt. The last city untouched by Israeli ground troops, Rafah also serves as the main entry point of humanitarian aid via neighbouring Egypt for desperately needed relief supplies. Israel has warned it will expand its ground operations into Rafah if Palestinian armed group Hamas does not free the remaining captives held in Gaza by the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in March. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted the army will keep fighting until it has destroyed Hamas and freed the remaining captives.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez welcomed strengthened ties with Morocco at all levels and reiterated his country’s position in support of Morrocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara territory.
