Health officials also reported the death of another 9 year-old boy in Gaza Thursday, but the circumstances were not clear. As 2026 begins, the shaky 12-week-old ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has largely ended large-scale Israeli bombardment of Gaza. At least three Israeli soldiers have died in Gaza since the ceasefire came down, killed by militant attacks or explosive detonations. UNICEF said Thursday that 7-year-old Ata Mai had drowned Saturday in severe flooding that engulfed his tent camp in Gaza City. The Israeli military says it fires warning shots if someone crosses the line and fires at anyone judged to be posing a threat to troops.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's daughter, Ju Ae, who is likely being prepared as his successor, accompanied her parents on her first public visit to the Kumsusan mausoleum to pay respects to former leaders, state media photos published on Friday showed. Ju Ae has been making increasingly prominent appearances in state media over the past three years, fuelling speculation by analysts and South Korea's intelligence agency that she may be in line to be the country's fourth-generation leader. Kim Ju Ae, who is believed to have been born in the early 2010s, attended this year's New Year celebrations, according to state media on Thursday. Kim visits Kumsusan to honour his grandfather and state founder, Kim Il Sung, and father Kim Jong Il on key dates and anniversaries in a gesture affirming the dynastic heritage of the nuclear-armed country. Morocco has been elected to the presidency of the Governing Board of the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) for the 2026–2028 term, in the person of Zohour Alaoui, the Kingdom’s Ambassador to Berlin. This unanimous election of Morocco by the members came at the conclusion of the 21st meeting of the UIL Governing Board, held recently in Hamburg. The meeting also saw the election of the former Vice President and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica, Epsy Campbell Barr, as Vice President of the Governing Board of this UN institute. The election of Zohour Alaoui as President of the UIL Governing Board reflects international recognition of Morocco’s commitment, as well as the pioneering role of King Mohammed VI in promoting education as a fundamental pillar of peace and sustainable development. Fez, Agadir and Essaouira have also been part of this global network since 2023.

Global conflict hotspots in 2026 Aleksander Olech 01.01.2026 17:59 DrukujPDFPhoto. AI gen FacebookTwitterLinkedInCopy linkSend email Beyond the wars in Ukraine and Gaza/Israel, a number of other regions are emerging as potential flashpoints that may shape the global security environment in 2026 and directly affect European and transatlantic stability. Looking ahead to 2026, it is clear that instability will not be limited to the most visible theatres of war. Instead, a combination of great-power competition, proxy conflicts and structural fragility is likely to intensify tensions across several regions of strategic importance. In 2026, this dynamic is likely to generate intensified migration flows towards North Africa and Europe, increasing pressure on the southern flank of NATO and the EU.

Israel’s recognition of the Somaliland region as an independent state has now stirred what had been relatively still waters, prompting a flurry of diplomatic contacts among several countries in the Middle East and North Africa, foremost among them Egypt. Cairo further called for an emergency meeting of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council to discuss the implications of the recognition. He stressed Somalia’s firm rejection of what he described as Israel’s reckless decision, citing its “serious repercussions that could draw external hostility and conflicts into Somalia’s interior.”Egyptian ConcernsFor Egypt, Israel’s recognition of Somaliland is expected to carry several long-term consequences. Hassan Sheikh Ali Noor, a professor of security studies at the Higher Institute for Security Studies in Mogadishu, told Alhurra that the timing of Israel’s recognition appears to be little more than an attempt to export Israel’s domestic crises abroad. Joint CooperationIn August 2024, Egypt and Somalia signed a military cooperation protocol.

This was due to the alleged killing of Christians by terrorist groups in the country. I have been researching conflicts, terrorism and the formation of insurgent groups in Nigeria and the Sahel for over a decade. Immediate gainsFirst, the recent cooperation between the US and Nigerian military would help Nigeria with enhanced surveillance and intelligence gathering. The Nigerian military needs to take advantage of the impact of the strikes. But the Nigerian military needs to keep a close eye on the terror group splintering as a result of success against its military bases.
