One month after a devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit Morocco, rubble still litters villages around the Atlas Mountains. Returning to traditional architecture may, in fact, be part of the answer to the need for greater resilience. We have large towns with concrete, rather recent architecture. We'll call them fairly recent buildings that weren't quite up to standard, but they had the appearance of strength and modernity. We also have what we call unconventional, vernacular, traditional architecture that has stood up to the test.

A few interesting theories exist about how the first humans found their way into North America after dispersing from Africa and Asia. What we knew before nowThe most significant attempt at determining when humans first walked across North America was made a few years back. In their findings, they discovered fossilized footprints in New Mexico that indicate early humans were walking across North America around 23,000 years ago. The human footprints suggest that modern humans also lived in White Sands National Park during the last ice age. The melting glaciers also filled basins, creating the Great Lakes of North America.

Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia have toughened their tone towards Europe. "These countries have discovered their leverage and bargaining power, which has enabled them to reverse the power asymmetry," Isabelle Werenfels, senior fellow at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP), told DW. "Last year has been quite challenging for the relations with the European Union and the Maghreb region," he told DW. Morocco tightened ties with Western countries but widened the gap with its neighbor Algeria over the Westen Sahara dispute. TEL AVIV, Israel—Israel is reeling from an unprecedented incursion of Hamas militants across the Gaza border early Saturday that killed at least 250 people and wounded more than 1,400, with the death toll expected to rise. Hamas militants attacked via the land, sea, and air. One Israeli military officer described the attack to Foreign Policy as a “combined offensive” on the part of Hamas. Israel was completely surprised by a very well-coordinated attack by Hamas from Gaza,” retired Israel Defense Forces Maj. Gen. Giora Eiland told Foreign Policy. The Hamas attack followed months of severe internal unrest in Israel, spurred by the far-right Netanyahu government’s push to overhaul the country’s judiciary.

A human rights group has called for independent investigation into circumstances surrounding the case of an Iranian comatose schoolgirl amid mounting evidence of a cover up. She was reportedly pushed by a hijab enforcer recently deployed at subways stations, and has been in a coma since. Iran’s state media has aired footage showing Armita entering a Tehran subway station without covering her hair, waiting with friends, and then being carried out of a metro car unconscious by her friends. The state media have not shown any footage from inside the metro car and claim there were no CCTVs to record the incident inside the train. Two eyewitnesses have also confirmed to the Guardian that hijab enforcers were involved in Armita’s injury Sunday morning.

"If I ever come out in northern Nigeria to say I am an atheist, it will be an automatic death sentence," said the man, a business owner in his 30s. The most recent instance of a death sentence, issued in December against an Islamic cleric, Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara, has not been carried out. At least three people have been killed for alleged blasphemy in northern Nigeria in the past year. The latest victim, killed in June, was a Muslim stoned to death after being accused of making comments that blasphemed Islam. Authorities in Nigeria have failed to act to prevent such attacks, and prosecutions have been rare, said Isa Sanusi, director of Amnesty International in Nigeria.

As global leaders travel to Morocco for the annual International Monetary Fund meeting, the Human Rights Watch organization has called on the IMF, World Bank and other international organizations to focus on financial reforms to protect people living in countries increasingly strapped by debt. “IMF loans to dozens of countries, affecting over one billion people, frequently push governments to cut spending and raise regressive taxes in ways that harm rights,” said HRW, citing a new report on the issue. IMF bailout conditions “make lives already upended by global inflation and other economic challenges even harder,” they add. The 131-page HRW report, released at the end of September, details the impact of IMF financial policies in the face of a looming global debt crisis. The report assesses loans made in 38 countries from March 2020 to March 2023.

The UN Human Rights Council has announced that its fact-finding committee on Iran is probing the reported assault on a 16-year-old girl, who is in coma at a Tehran hospital. Armita Geravand suffered a severe head injury when reportedly hijab enforcers used physical force in the subway on October 1 because she was not wearing a headscarf. UNHRC stated, "We are investigating the reported assault of 16-year-old Armita Geravand for alleged non-compliance with mandatory hijab laws, one year after the death in custody of Mahsa Amini. Amnesty International has also urged the global community to press Iranian authorities to permit an independent international delegation, including United Nations experts, to investigate the circumstances leading to Geravand’s coma after reports of an attack by compulsory hijab enforcers. He emphasized that reports suggest her situation resulted from a confrontation with hijab enforcement authorities and underscored that if confirmed, it would be unacceptable and unjustifiable.
