RABAT, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Moroccans welcomed on Thursday the announcement that their country would co-host the 2030 World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal, after years of failed attempts. After five failed attempts to become World Cup hosts, the announcement that Morocco will share the honours will lift spirits in the north African country, a month after a devastating earthquake that killed nearly 3,000 people. Morocco became the first Arabic-speaking country to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Qatar in 2022. The decision comes days after Morocco was also chosen to host the 2025 African Cup of Nations after several other bids dropped out. "It is an honour for us to host the World Cup in Africa again... it will help develop African football," said Boris Yameogo, a student from Burkina Faso living in Rabat.

The leader of the Free Destourian Party (PDL), one of the main opposition parties in Tunisia, was placed in conditional detention on Tuesday after she was arrested in front of the presidential palace, according to the lawyer of her party. According to her party, Ms. Moussi was arrested in front of the presidential palace in Carthage, where she had come to file appeals against presidential decrees, as she claimed. In a video posted on the PDL’s Facebook page, Ms. Moussi stated before her arrest that the presidential office had refused to accept her appeal and issue her an acknowledgment receipt. Since early February, authorities have incarcerated several opposition figures, including the historic leader of the Islamist-conservative Ennahdha party, Rached Ghannouchi, as well as prominent figures, including former ministers and businesspeople. President Saied, accused by the opposition of authoritarianism, has labeled the arrested individuals as “terrorists” and claimed they were involved in a “plot against the security of the state.”

Migration, terrorism and energy — three 'crisis' topics — have preoccupied EU policy and their societies' view of their neighbourhood in northern Africa for a long time. For too long, keeping the problems — literally — at bay has been left to southern European member countries of the EU. The following thoughts outline some dimensions, which are crucial in opening a new chapter with our north African neighbours. Now, European policy is in danger of turning towards a 'super-realist' mode of engagement, forgetting all lessons about conditionality and, at the same time, laying the groundwork for future failures. Morocco’s bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal is “a message of peace, tolerance, and inclusion,” emphasized FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The FIFA Executive Committee announced it unanimously selected the joint Morocco-Spain-Portugal bid to host the 2030 World Cup since it was the only bid in the race for hosting the 2030 event. King Mohammed VI “is pleased to announce to the Moroccan people that the FIFA Executive Committee has unanimously selected the Morocco-Spain-Portugal bid as the sole candidacy for hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup,” the statement said. “I am confident that together with Morocco and Portugal, we will host the best World Cup in history,” he added. However, a novelty of the 2030 World Cup will be that the opening three matches of the tournament will be played in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, to mark the centenary of the very first World Cup.
