Protesters took to the streets in various Kenyan cities calling for President Ruto to step down, as police shot tear gas and clashed with demonstrators. At least one person was killed in the renewed protests, despite president Ruto firing most of his cabinet members, Reuters reported. The protests erupted against tax hikes a month ago, following a contentious legislation that aimed to raise 78 billion dollars to address the country’s soaring debt. In total, at least 50 people have been killed in the protests according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), which also cited cases of enforced disappearances. The demonstrators and the failure of the government to meet the aspirations of the youth, known as generation Z, put President Ruto under a rough test.

Ghana’s cocoa harvest was 55% less than an average year, standing at 429,323 tons, as climate change induced heat waves took a toll on local farmers. Special commodities monitors have predicted a catastrophic harvest in Ghana and other West African producers this year, following a heat wave and tree disease that damaged the harvest. The meagre harvest in Ghana, the world’s top cocoa producer, sent prices of chocolate skyrocketing. In April, the expected drop in output led authorities to increase farmgate cocoa prices by 58% to enhance the income of farmers. In the US, end consumers are already feeling the heat after an increase in chocolate prices on store shelves by more than 10%, while in the UK prices increased by 12.6%.

North Korea and China are watching for possible regional impacts from Japan's recent enhanced security cooperation with Germany. North Korea slammed the security cooperation as "collusion" that crossed a "red line" and is "reminiscent of the Second World War," according to North Korea's state-run KCNA on Monday. Kishida and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz agreed in Berlin on Friday to boost their security cooperation after attending a NATO summit in Washington. Beijing said the cooperation between Japan and Germany should not create tensions in the Asia-Pacific region. However, she continued, "Strengthening NATO-IP4 ties could exacerbate tensions with China and Russia, who may perceive this cooperation as a containment strategy," and encourage countries like North Korea to align more closely with them.

In theory, this availability offers the promise of a less hierarchical and more inclusive energy politics: energy production that is less dependent on fixed reserves easily controlled by state and corporate actors. But recent initiatives to produce green energy in the Middle East and North Africa illustrate that previously existing dependencies and the predominance of private control over energy production are not often overcome—they are merely reconfigured. Green Colonial DependenciesMany countries in the Middle East and North Africa, including Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi-Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Iran, are trying to turn themselves into renewable energy or regional electricity hubs. [4]When it comes to democratizing infrastructure, no country in the region is even close to exploiting the enormous potential of decentralized solar energy. The protests showed the unrealistic expectations that renewable energy projects would bring about peaceful interdependence.
