CAIRO- 22 July 2021: US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) President Félix Tshisekedi discussed the importance of reducing the conflict between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia over the controversial Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), according to a statement by the US Department of State on Wednesday evening. Blinken “emphasized the importance of the African Union’s role in reducing conflict and mediating the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam dispute. This comes despite Egyptian and Sudanese rejection of the second filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which Ethiopia builds on the Blue Nile, unless the three countries reach a legally binding agreement on the dam. Blinken and Tshisekedi talked about some African issues such as the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, the statement said. Secretary Blinken emphasized the United States’ grave concern about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, the statement added.

CAIRO – 22 July 2021: Sources at the Ministry of Health and Population told Al Watan newspaper on Thursday that the fourth wave of COVID-19 is estimated to begin late in September or early in October. However, if 20 percent of the population is vaccinated beforehand, the death rate can drop by 88 percent during the fourth wave. The sources added that Delta Plus variant is expected to enter Egypt, and that the ministry is working on modifying the COVID-19 treatment protocol to cope with such mutation. That is by adding more vitamins to boost the immunity. It is noted that Delta Plus spreads fast having children as the most vulnerable group.

Egypt’s Health Ministry on Wednesday confirmed 49 new coronavirus cases, bringing the country’s total number of confirmed cases up to 283,862. The total number of COVID-19-related deaths has now reached 16,465 nationwide, after the ministry announced eight deaths. And 801 patients were discharged from quarantine at isolation hospitals, raising Egypt’s total number of fully-recovered cases to 225,869. Madbouly announced at the beginning of June that 2.5 million citizens have received a vaccine against COVID-19, out of Egypt’s population of 104 million. Egypt’s Prime Minister added that Egypt has also produced one million doses of coronavirus vaccines at state-owned Vacsera thus far.

CAIRO – 21 July 2021: The Egyptian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday voiced the country’s deep concern of a planned change in the situation of the abandoned area of Varosha in Cyprus, through partially opening it. The Egyptian ministry’s statement called the step as a violation of the UN Security Council-related resolutions. The ministry called for full commitment to the comprehensive settlement path of the Cyprus issue, according to the international legitimacy's resolutions. Turkish Cypriots plan to open part of the town deserted since the 1974 invasion that divided Cyprus. His remarks came as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made a visit to mark the 47th anniversary of Turkey's invasion of Cyprus.

The Egyptian Doctors Syndicate has not received any complaint of a medical error in the case of actress Yasmine Abdel Aziz, syndicate member Ibrahim al-Zayat, said. He explained that the Syndicate will open an investigation into the matter with the doctor who caused the condition of Abdel Aziz and hold him accountable, if he caused the patient’s condition to deteriorate. He stressed that people confuse medical error or negligence and medical complication that may occur during surgery. The Syndicate has ways to hold a doctor accountable if he causes a medical error, as happened in the case of Abdel Aziz, he said. Abdel Aziz was admitted to the ICU after alleged health complications following surgery.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi received a phone call Tuesday evening from British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, during which the two addressed British-Egyptian relations as well as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) crisis. The two leaders discussed trade, investment cooperation, health and security, and efforts to combat terrorism, while also exchanging views on the latest developments in the GERD crisis, official spokesperson for the Presidency Bassam Rady said. The discussion comes after the UN Security Council held in early July a hearing on the negotiations between Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia, who have failed to reach an agreement for years. Sisi affirmed Egypt’s firm stance on maintaining its historical rights to the Nile waters and to preserve Egypt’s water security in the meantime and in the future. Johnson made clear his support for efforts to resume the negotiation process in order to reach a just solution to the issue.
