CAIRO- 22 July 2021: US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) President Félix Tshisekedi discussed the importance of reducing the conflict between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia over the controversial Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), according to a statement by the US Department of State on Wednesday evening. Blinken “emphasized the importance of the African Union’s role in reducing conflict and mediating the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam dispute. This comes despite Egyptian and Sudanese rejection of the second filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which Ethiopia builds on the Blue Nile, unless the three countries reach a legally binding agreement on the dam. Blinken and Tshisekedi talked about some African issues such as the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, the statement said. CAIRO – 22 July 2021: Sources at the Ministry of Health and Population told Al Watan newspaper on Thursday that the fourth wave of COVID-19 is estimated to begin late in September or early in October. Egypt’s Health Ministry on Wednesday confirmed 49 new coronavirus cases, bringing the country’s total number of confirmed cases up to 283,862. The total number of COVID-19-related deaths has now reached 16,465 nationwide, after the ministry announced eight deaths. And 801 patients were discharged from quarantine at isolation hospitals, raising Egypt’s total number of fully-recovered cases to 225,869. Madbouly announced at the beginning of June that 2.5 million citizens have received a vaccine against COVID-19, out of Egypt’s population of 104 million. Egypt’s Prime Minister added that Egypt has also produced one million doses of coronavirus vaccines at state-owned Vacsera thus far.

The two leaders discussed trade, investment cooperation, health and security, and efforts to combat terrorism, while also exchanging views on the latest developments in the GERD crisis, official spokesperson for the Presidency Bassam Rady said. The discussion comes after the UN Security Council held in early July a hearing on the negotiations between Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia, who have failed to reach an agreement for years. Sisi affirmed Egypt’s firm stance on maintaining its historical rights to the Nile waters and to preserve Egypt’s water security in the meantime and in the future. Johnson made clear his support for efforts to resume the negotiation process in order to reach a just solution to the issue.
