The government dramatically deported a senior European Union official in apparent retaliation for the grey listing of Kenya as a “wash wash” paradise, the Star can exclusively report. Other consequences include slowing down the pace of business, increasing transaction costs and may even threaten deals and business relationships. The Star has established that days after the grey listing, Kenya dramatically deported a top EU official who works closely with the Financial Action Task Force, the global anti-money laundering watchdog that grey listed Kenya. David Hotte, a French national, was arrested at Wilson Airport on February 25, just a day after landing in Kenya. A man stands his ground along Tom Mboya street during demonstration against the Finance Bill 2024 on June 2nd, 2024. Mboya’s bronze monument towers only metres from the spot where he was felled, and it has become the centrepiece of ongoing protests fronted by Kenyan youth. There are many parallels between Gen Z in the streets and the life of Mboya. Mboya was 38 when he was murdered, so he’d legitimately fit the “youth” moniker that applies to Gen Z and Millennials. He also organised students’ airlifts that sent hundreds of Kenyan youths to the US in the 1950s and 1960s.

Today the nation goes to the polls to select its next government, with Labour under Keir Starmer leading the polls while the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and Reform all battle it out for the remaining seats.
