TOKYO: It resembles a malevolent robot from 1980s sci-fi but West Japan Railway's new humanoid employee was designed with nothing more sinister than a spot of painting and gardening in mind. Starting this month, the machine with a crude head and coke-bottle eyes mounted on a truck -- which can drive on rails -- will be put to use for maintenance work on the firm's network. Its operator sits in a cockpit on the truck, "seeing" through the robot's eyes via cameras and operating its powerful limbs and hands remotely. For now, the robot's primary task will focus on trimming tree branches along rails and painting metal frames that hold cables above trains, the company said. The technology will help fill worker shortages in ageing Japan as well as reduce accidents such as workers falling from high places or suffering electric shocks, the company says.

Security Council on Wednesday that the arrival of the first Kenyan police officers under a U.N.-backed mission marked a critical stage to restoring security in a country ravaged by gang violence. “The arrival of the first contingent of the Multinational Security Support kicks off a new era in Haiti,” Conille told diplomats in New York. Without substantial additional funding, BINUH said, the mission will be unable to complete a 12-month deployment, whose initial mandate ends in October. Most illegal guns seized in Haiti, and across the wider Caribbean, have been traced back to the United States. “We do not see the current embargo doing anything to prevent the flow of arms from the U.S.,” Nebenzia said.

As a multinational oil and gas major, TotalEnergies is the operator of block 11B/12B, holding a 45% stake. It is responsible for carrying out all prospective activities. A $400 million investment in exploration has yielded two major discoveries there — a one billion barrels equivalent gas find at the Brulpadda well in 2019, followed by another major discovery at the nearby Luiperd well in 2020.
