Taifa LeoThe newspaper projects that President William Ruto might soon reconstitute his Cabinet to win back the trust of the Kenyan public. The draconian Finance Bill 2024 was passed in the National Assembly, triggering countrywide mass action protests. This was after Ruto rejected the tax-laden Finance Bill 2024 following nationwide protests by the Kenyan youth. Daily Nation reports that the lawmakers who voted for the Finance Bill 2024 have had difficulty facing their constituents. The recent wave of nationwide demonstrations has once again been marred by acts of violence, vandalism and looting. Kenya prides itself as a nation governed by the rule of law, and it is imperative that this principle is upheld. The full force of law must be applied to send a clear message that such behaviour will not be condoned. Anything less would be a disservice to the vast majority of Kenyans who are exercising their right to protest peacefully and constructively. The stray remark from a Los Angeles beat cop friend lodged in Robert Towne’s brain like a splinter. “The one place I never really worked,” the officer told the screenwriter, “was Chinatown. After graduating, he quickly found work; first in television and then in film, writing sci-fi and horror for the exploitation mogul Roger Corman. He sensed a growing appetite for films that depicted the world as it was, even if it initially landed him in trouble. But that’s how sailors talk, he shrugged (and Nicholson, already attached to star, backed him up).

Kenya's education sector alone consumes over 10 million trees annually for cooking, with 90% of East African schools relying on firewood, and devastating forests. Clean cooking technologies offer a solution, reducing deforestation, aligning with climate goals, and saving money for schools. Several initiatives by NGOs, private sectors, and government agencies support this shift. Success hinges on persuading school heads and stakeholders to adopt these technologies, and influencing budget holders and policymakers. Interested schools should connect with these initiatives, secure funding, and train staff for implementation.

South Africa is seeking to alter the terms of a landmark agreement under which it promised to cut its reliance on coal in exchange for access to financing. The government of President Cyril Ramaphosa is pushing to renegotiate a deal with Climate Investment Funds (CIF), a group tied to the World Bank, so that it won’t be required to close three coal-fired power plants in the coming years. The plants, owned and operated by Eskom, are among the country’s biggest polluters, according to government advisers. South Africa’s government is seeking an “adjusted approach to the programme with the decommissioning date for three power stations” moved to the end of March 2030, the department overseeing the project in the president’s office told Bloomberg. The decision is motivated by “energy security concerns,” the department said, adding that South Africa is still working to reduce its emissions.
