In a major development, the United States and its key Western allies have identified the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as a major threat not just to Pakistan but also to their own security. What was significant in the joint statement was the fact that the US and its Western allies voiced grave concerns over the increasing threat of terrorist groups, including Islamic State–Khorasan Province (ISKP), Al Qaeda, TTP and others, in Afghanistan. Importantly, the joint statement noted that these groups, including TTP, “deeply affect security and stability inside the country, in the region and beyond”, and called on the Taliban to uphold Afghanistan’s obligation to deny these groups safe haven. This was the first time any Western bloc explicitly termed TTP a threat to their security, something that would be welcomed by Pakistan. The renewed interest of these powerful Western countries, which formed the core of the US coalition after the 9/11 attacks, indicated that they were increasingly concerned over the Afghanistan situation.

Former Senate chairman and senior PPP leader Senator Raza Rabbani said on Monday that the people of Pakistan have a right to know if the country's nuclear assets are under pressure. "The dragging of the feet by the IMF on signing the agreement and reluctance of friendly countries, except China, to help sans the IMF, Parliament needs to be taken into confidence." “It appears Pakistan is being softened up to play a role which is against its national and strategic interests,” he added. The senator further pointed out that the government has failed to discuss the issues pertaining to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the increase in terrorism. “It seems be it the PTI or present governments want azadi [freedom] from Parliament and the Constitution, 1973, the senator added.

Reports suggest that sensing Islamabad’s position, the Afghan Taliban proposed a new plan that envisaged disarming the TTP and relocating their members from the border areas. However, unlike previous plans, the TTP members will be resettled inside Afghanistan. Currently, there are between eight to 12 thousand TTP militants in Afghanistan, and the number goes up to 30,000 if their family members are included. It is also important to remember that following the Afghan Taliban takeover in August 2021, the PTI government initiated talks with the TTP and allowed hundreds of TTP militants to resettle in Pakistan. There can be no compromise on matters of national security and the time for offering concessions to the TTP is over.
