The United States is happy for India to continue buying as much Russian oil as it wants, including at prices above a G7-imposed price cap mechanism, if it steers clear of Western insurance, finance and maritime services bound by the cap, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Friday. “Russia is going to find it very difficult to continue shipping as much oil as they have done when the EU stops buying Russian oil,” Yellen said. Final details of the price cap to be imposed by wealthy G7 democracies and Australia are still coming together ahead of a December 5 deadline. The existence of the cap would give India, China and other major buyers of Russian crude leverage to push down the price they pay to Moscow, Yellen said. Russian oil “is going to be selling at bargain prices and we’re happy to have India get that bargain or Africa or China.

The civic conditions have become pathetic in the ancient city of Jhelum. It is quite disappointing for me, as I have wonderfully nostalgic memories of my birthplace, where we lived till 1957. The town has historic importance as the first encounter between Alexander the Great and Indian Raja Porus took place on the banks of Jhelum River in 326BC. When asked by Alexander how he wished to be treated, Porus famously replied, “Treat me as a king would treat another king.” Impressed, Alexander treated him with dignity. The civil administration and other bodies concerned should restore the glory of Jhelum so that people may again be able to enjoy the sounds and sights of a great city.

ISLAMABAD: Turkish state-run aid agency is assisting flood-battered farmers in Pakistan to mitigate a looming threat to food security caused by recent super floods and rains that inundated millions of acres of croplands across the country. Wheat is the main winter crop and a major source of income for millions of farmers across Pakistan. So far, the relief agency has distributed 60 tons of wheat seeds to 700 small-scale farmers in eight worst-affected districts of Sindh, TIKA Karachi Coordinator Halil Ibrahim Basaran told Anadolu Agency. Since the floodwaters have receded, he further said, now seeds and fertilizers are the key requirements of the millions of farmers in the flood-hit areas. The massive floods have caused $30 billion in losses to the nation’s already struggling economy, mainly in infrastructure and agriculture.

An extension for the incumbent army chief, perhaps? Take the example of Imran Khan who has, of late, said that he couldn’t care less who became the next army chief. Hence, arguably the world is not ending; we as a nation are getting better and more democratic. We may not realise this is a part of the nation and institution-building processes, but it is. We might be labouring in a fugue state, but our labours are not futile.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan said on Friday the next army chief should be appointed on merit but expressed his doubt that the incumbent government would do so. “Nawaz Sharif is now going to decide about the army chief’s appointment. Nawaz Sharif was convicted by the JIT [joint investigation team which investigated corruption cases against him], now he will take the country’s decision,” he added. Imran lashed out at Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, saying that he was facing conviction by courts in the cases filed by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). Imran accused Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah of extrajudicial killings.

The VoidPhoto credit: Perry Nelson-USA TODAY SportsIt doesn’t matter who Edmonton Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft plugs into the left-wing spot that had been occupied by Evander Kane until Tuesday. How that plays out and who’ll fill the void for anywhere from 17 to 31 games, we don’t know. That said, I don’t mind seeing Woodcroft giving Holloway, who has just 10 NHL games on his resume, a look. SUCK IT UPNov 1, 2022; Edmonton, Alberta, CAN; Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane (91) celebrates after scoring a goal during the first period against the Nashville Predators at Rogers Place. The way I see it, two aspects of the Oilers game can do much to mitigate the loss of Kane.

The former prime minister said that the “plan” to assassinate him was first formulated in September which was “unearthed in a public rally on September 24”. You have to fix this as the country doesn’t work without institutions.”The former prime minister said that it is unimaginable in western countries what is happening in Pakistan these days. The PTI chief also said it was a miracle that so many people survived the attack. According to Imran Khan, all eyes are on the top court now as the nation has “lost trust” in the institutions, saying that Pakistan is becoming a banana republic. Imran also hailed Ibtesam – the young man whose quick thinking had saved the former prime minister – for his “heroic effort”. DG ISPR says ‘it’ll be a disrespect to our military’; the military will be disrespected when it fails to take action on the matter,” said Imran. 13 other people were also hurt in the attack, which Khan blames on Prime Minister Sharif and two other government and army officials. Khan accused Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan and an official from the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) spy agency and orchestrating the shooting.

SHARM EL SHEIKH, Egypt: A trickle of climate “loss and damage” funding pledges from rich countries at the COP27 summit in Egypt have been welcomed by observers and developing nations, who say they must pave the way for a broad global financing deal. The controversial issue is a key focus of the UN meeting, as a relentless surge of impacts wreak death, destruction and mounting economic losses on developing nations least responsible for planet-heating emissions. It shows that the issue has been acknowledged after years of advocacy,” said Harjeet Singh, head of global political strategy at the Climate Action Network. Scotland, which kicked off the loss and damage pledges last year when Britain hosted the COP26 summit, has also upped its contribution to $8 million. It announced $170 million for the project this week, while Ireland said it would contribute $10 million for 2023.
