Share:The news conference of a tearful Senator Azam Swati brought tears to the eyes of all Pakistanis and the shameful act of sending an “obscene video clip” to the senator’s wife made the whole nation bow its head in shame. There are no words in any dictionary of the world’s languages to condemn this ghastly, gruesome and horrible act by the unknown characters and enemies of the country. Our political parties and the political characters forget the basic ethical values and even don’t mind crossing all the moral values when disagreeing or opposing their political rivals. Such politics are of the dirtiest form presently prevailing in any part of the world and needs to be condemned forcefully by all segments of the society. Our political leadership has gone so low in ethics and morality that they not only use abusive language but even don’t hesitate in threatening their opponents with making their dirty videos public.

The Canadian men’s national team won its final FIFA World Cup tuneup 2-1 over Japan on Thursday without standouts Alphonso Davies and Stephen Eustáquio. A Lucas Cavallini penalty kick in extra time that barely crossed the line provided Canada with the win at Al Maktoum Stadium in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Canadian coach John Herdman was hopeful both Eustáquio and Davies would be ready for Canada’s World Cup opener against Belgium in Qatar on Wednesday. The win against Japan pushed Canada’s record to 3-2-3 since its successful World Cup CONCACAF qualifying run concluded last March. Japan enters the World Cup ranked 24th, compared to Canada at 41.

Breast cancer is curable if detected early, but there are several factors that hamper an early diagnosis. Majority of women themselves tend to ignore the need for timely screening, and then there are those with limited access to clinics and hospitals. Even when there are no issues related to affordability, access and willingness, the rather conservative social environment prevents them from sharing their concerns with family members. All these factors combine together to take away lives of more than 40,000 women every year in the country. We need to educate women about self-examination, and remove barriers to early detection in order to save precious lives.

Now industrial units have also joined them as they have started using wood and coal as fuel. The textile industry has been hit the hardest by the gas crisis as they have to keep their boilers burning. But due to non-availability of gas, they are forced to burn wood or coal, which adds to environmental pollution. This could put textile exports to the US and the EU in risk because these Western importers are very particular about the industry's role in climate change. The production cost of the export industry has increased three to five times due to the use of wood, coal, and furnaces, Balwani said.

PTI chief Imran Khan will not get away so easily from the sale of The Toshakhana gifts, especially the watches gifted by Saudi Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman. As was explained at the time of the original disclosures, Me Khan had sold gifts that he had legally taken back from the Toshakhana after paying 50 percent of their assessed value. PM’s Interior Adviser is also shown as performing the personal service of finding Ms ‘Gogi’ a buyer, raising questions about why he was performing such a personal task. Being Bollywood to retain gifts after paying part of the assessed value will only be workable if the assessments are not honest. It might be best not to allow any retention, and compel the surrender of all gifts received to the Toshakhana.

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (14 Aug 1973 to 5 July 1977) was the last real or relevant Prime Minister of Pakistan. Personally, I always had respect for Jamali Sahib but he had surrounded himself with people of vested interests and sycophants. In the words of Comrade Hanif Ramay, “Bhutto Sahib left the struggle from where it had started”. From a relevant PM like ZAB to the current irrelevant head of government the decline has been painful and uncalled for. A step in the right direction does not always mean a step in the forward direction. Given the conditions and circumstances, a backward step could be a life-saving step– a positive step and a step in the right direction. For them, the right step is a step forward. It will not be a backward step rather it will be a step in the right direction.

Share:It appears that some promising developments came out of the 27th Conference of Parties (COP 27), held this year in Egypt. One of the major achievements is that of the development of the Global Shield Fund, which aims to align behind vulnerable countries’ “strategies for closing protection gaps using a broad range of appropriate instruments”. Pakistan is one of the seven countries—called the “pathfinder countries”, which are the recipients of this funding. It is almost unanimously agreed by all scholars, scientists and leaders that climate change played a huge part in increasing the frequency and strength of floods. Pakistan contributes minimally to global GHG emissions—our 2020 emissions of carbon dioxide accounted for less than 0.7 percent of global emissions.
