Approximately 20,000 rallied on Thursday Saturday, August 27, 2016 Santa Fe Socialists vow action on crime after mass mobilizationThe Socialist government of Santa Fe province said it “had heard the message” yesterday sent by a massive march in Rosario on Thursday night calling for greater security and appealed for greater cooperation with the national government. An estimated 20,000 people marched in Rosario last night in response to a wave of violence that has included 24 murders in the last month. Rosario’s homicide rate has been well above the national average for years but the recent surge was met with a non-partisan mobilization demanding a halt to the violence. Buenos Aires province had a homicide rate of 7.4 murders per 100,000 inhabitants in 2015 and the City of Buenos Aires clocked in at 5.4 murders per 100,000 inhabitants. The provinces of Santa Fe, Mendoza, Formosa and Neuquén all suffer from notably high murder rates, while in terms of robberies, Mendoza, Neuquén, Salta, Río Negro and Buenos Aires City are the worst-hit.

Saturday, August 27, 2016 Rights groups reject migrant detentionHuman rights groups have united to voice their concerns over government plans to create a new detention facility for immigrants who arrive in Argentina without the necessary paperwork. “Amnesty International discourages the routine use of detention of foreigners as a tool for the exercise of immigration control. Everyone, including migrants and asylum-seekers have the right to liberty and freedom of movement and protection from arbitrary arrest and detention,” Amnesty International Argentina said in a statement released in response to the proposals. “Amnesty International warns of the negative impact on human rights of migration-related detention and opposes the use of detention as a form of punishment or deterrence, rather than addressing the causes which cause irregular immigration,” it added. “Expulsion as a sanction against irregular immigration is a last resort that the State can use.

Facing serious charges in Argentina Saturday, August 27, 2016 Servini seeks to block Corradi extraditionFederal Judge María Servini de Cubría moved yesterday to block a request by her colleague Judge Sandra Arroyo accepting the extradition of Ibar Pérez Corradi to the United States, arguing that there was no urgency to send the suspected mastermind of the General Rodríguez triple murder to Washington. On Wednesday, Arroyo Salgado ordered once again that financier Pérez Corradi be sent to the United States to satisfy an extradition request. In a resolution made public yesterday, Servini de Cubría argued that “US judicial authorities have not insisted on, nor requested, the urgent extradition of Pérez Corradi” that Arroyo Salgado has greenlighted. After initially refusing to trade a Paraguayan prison cell for another in Argentina, Pérez Corradi has agreed to a swift extradition process that included his entry into a protection programme. Pérez Corradi has been accused of ordering the murders.

BRASILIA — The trial against Brazil’s president Dilma Rousseff turned into a yelling match and was temporarily suspended yesterday after the head of Senate declared “stupidity is endless” and sharply criticized a colleague who had questioned the body’s moral authority. The second day of the trial against Rousseff got off to an edgy start when Senate President Renan Calheiros decided to bring up a comment made on Thursday by Senator Gleisi Hoffmann, a member of Rousseff’s Workers’ Party. “This impeachment trial has become a loony bin,” Calheiros said, appealing for calm. Temer has been interim president since mid-May, when Rousseff was suspended after Congress decided it would continue the impeachment process that began in the Lower House.

Produced by a pay-to-volunteer company based in Buenos Aires called Voluntario Global, the video became a sensation after being picked up by La Nacion. It’s not all of Buenos Aires! Die alone!”With that in mind…The Bubble receives mail every once in awhile, asking, “How do you survive in Buenos Aires?” With its mad bus drivers, mad inflation and madly cobbled streets and mad – truly truly mad sunsets? A bubble created by social media posts that depict Buenos Aires not tan eterna como el agua y como el aire, but as a bacchanal of parties far past dawn, of endless asados, of life on pause.

Different human rights organizations today raised alarm bells after news surfaced that the Macri administration is set to open a center to hold and process immigrants who break Argentine migration law. The center, located in the Capital’s neighborhood of Barracas, would start operating on September 1 and, according to a resolution from the Security Ministry headed by Patricia Bullrich, will hold those who “illegally entered the (nation’s) territory” or have “a court order determining their expulsion,” a decision that is finally made by the National Migrations Direction (DNM). Different social organizations were quick to question the decision, arguing that not only illegal immigration does not configure a just cause for detention, but that it would also be a radical change of turn in the country’s immigration policy, historically welcoming to those who want to settle in the country. All people, migrants and asylum seekers included, have a right to freedom, freedom of circulation and protection against arbitrary detention,” the release adds. This is basically all South America) to instate a persecution plan that is manifested in the 12,700 immigrants prosecuted during the year’s first semester.”Ramos goes on to say that, according to a member of a government entity tasked with defending immigrants, “the UN’s different human rights conventions for migratory policies, which our country has signed, clearly state that the detention of people for migratory regulation purposes harms freedom itself and criminalizes the right of circulation.”No official from the Macri administration has commented on the issue at the time this article is being written.

What Was “La Perla”? La Perla became the largest center of its kind in Argentina’s interior, second only to Buenos Aires’ Campo de Mayo and ESMA. According to Emiliano Fessia, the head of La Perla Museum, there were also items stolen from the victims’ houses such as furniture, which would then be sold. In 2007, the government turned La Perla into an “Espacio para la Memoria,” literally a “space of memory” or museum documenting the horrors that occurred there. SignificanceWhy are the convictions of La Perla so important?

Around 300 families — an estimated 500 people — have begun to unlawfully occupy space in a rural area near Route 25 in the partido (or district in Buenos Aires Province) of Moreno since last Friday. The issue of tomas de terrenos, sometimes referred to as tomas, is very much a part of sociopolitical dynamics in Buenos Aires Province. Tomas generally stem from masses of marginalized people, often un- or underemployed, without access to credit or shelter, who turn to occupying space public or private land. The Buenos Aires Province police are present but for now, have not intervened. However, as in the case of the Merlo, there remains a housing necessity that needs to be addressed, independent of the internal conflicts.

President Mauricio Macri’s party, the Republican Proposal (PRO), will be going on a “spiritual retreat” today in San Juan province to show “unity within the government and to consolidate their political message”. “It’s time to galvanize the troops,” said one of the organizers, the President of the National Executive Council, Humberto Schiavoni. This is not the first time that the PRO organizes a retreat like this: it’s something that the party has been doing since 2007, when Macri became the mayor of the City of Buenos Aires. The entire Cabinet went on a retreat just before Macri became president in December. In fact, Buenos Aires Province Governor María Eugenia Vidal has started doing these retreats on a provincial level as well.

Audio recording enrages former president Friday, August 26, 2016 CFK, FpV lash out at Marijuan after leakFormer president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner lashed out at Federal prosecutor Guillermo Marijuan for being biased yesterday, a day after a Whatsapp audio recording from the prosecutor suggesting that he was close to seeking the arrest of the former president was leaked. In addition, Victory Front (FpV) lawmaker Rodolfo Tailhade requested that Marijuan be subject to impeachment in the aftermath of the leak, citing what he called the prosecutor’s failure to carry out his functions properly. Tailhade said that the leak made it obvious that Mari-juan was simply seeking Fernández de Kirchner’s arrest as his primary objective. “Their method is to circulate the report in the press, then validate the criminal complaint, allowing for new media operations,” tweeted Fernández de Kirchner. ... will some prosecutor request Marijuan’s telephones or who is responsible for this,” she tweeted sarcastically.

Friday, August 26, 2016 Macri cleared in Borda caseA criminal cassation court has confirmed the dropping of charges against President Mauricio Macri and Buenos Aires Governor María Eugenia Vidal relating to the 2013 violence at the Buenos Aires City Borda Psychiatric Hospital, but ordered that the case be re-opened against two former Metropolitan Police officers. Macri, who was mayor of the City at the time of incidents, was indicted along with others in the case by a lower court. That ruling was later overturned by an appeals court and yesterday the Cassation court confirmed that decision. The court, which noted yesterday that there was evidence that Macri had broken with his duties in a way that made it possible to charge him in the case. Finally, that Owners, Fleg and Socma Americana are part of a triad under which there is the same economic reality, beyond the corporate veil.”— Herald staff with DyN, Télam
