Federal Prosecutor Guillermo Marijuán has requested that former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and former Economy Minister Axel Kicillof be called into questioning on charges of covering-up and hiding information in their testimony. Neither Cristina nor Kicillof are allowed to leave the country until further notice. However, it should be noted that Marijuán opened the case back in June — not as a direct result of the televised exposé — and that former Treasury Prosecutor, Angelina Abbona is the main suspect of helping to cover up the “irregular” financial transactions. The hypothesis is that her office received the information on suspicious financial activity by Báez, requested by NML in 2013, and that it was willfully hidden from the judicial system because it had allegedly been deleted from the system. Federal Judge Sebastián Casanello, in charge of the Lázaro Báez case since 2013, has to decide whether or not to accept the prosecutor’s request: only then can Cristina and (or) Kicillof be called to the federal courthouse Comodoro Py for questioning.

Federal Prosecutor Ramiro González today requested former Planning Minister and current Victory Front (FPV) National Deputy Julio De Vido be sent to oral trial for the 2012 Buenos Aires railway disaster, also known as the Once Tragedy, in which 51 people were killed and 789 injured. De Vido is also being investigated in money laundering and embezzlement cases. In December, the federal court investigating the case read the verdicts for 29 people involved in the Once Tragedy. Federal Judge Claudio Bonadio prosecuted De Vido in May on the grounds that, as Planning Minister, there was “no way” that De Vido could have been oblivious of the deteriorated and sub-par state of the railway system. If he get a less severe sentence, he can request to go on probation and thus avoid doing time.

According to a report released yesterday by the National Statistics and Census Institute (INDEC), 9.3 percent of Argentina’s workforce (including people available and actively looking for jobs) was unemployed during the second trimester of 2016. However, in some cities with a lower unemployment rate, a large underemployment rate can be seen. For example, the underemployment rate in Tucumán is 13.9 percent. In the City of Buenos Aires, the unemployment rate is 8.5 percent (140,000 people) and underemployment is 10.2 percent (169,000). Ever since then, INDEC was criticized for presenting less-than-accurate figures on inflation, poverty and the economy at large.

Patriotism on a four-year cycle Wednesday, August 24, 2016 Olympics are the unicorn of sports TVBy Janet PaskinBloombergWASHINGTON — The 2016 Summer Olympics are over, and the women of Team USA won by a landslide. Prime-time network television caters to women in general, and the Olympics’ emphasis on pageantry and personality creates good, competitive drama. “The sports that are in the Olympics, they’re not being watched because they’re sports, they’re being watched because they’re for flag, for country, for young athletes who strive for four years — you know the stories,” Pilson said. “Not only will women watch certain programming, but if US athletes are doing well, more women will watch. “We take great pride in knowing that no-one devotes more broadcast network primetime coverage to women’s sports,” said Jim Bell, executive producer of NBC Olympics, in an e-mail.

But the AP found that WikiLeaks also routinely publishes identity records, phone numbers and other information easily exploited by criminals.
