Argentina power companies reject state offer to pay debt with bond
Power companies in the AGEERA electricity generators’ association have rejected Economy Minister Luis Caputo’s proposal to use bonds to pay power wholesaler CAMMESA’s debt of over US$1 billion. On Wednesday, the Government formalized the regime to pay CAMMESA’s debt to generator companies via resolution 58/2024 of the Energy Secretariat, which was published in the Official Gazette. The government’s proposal, conceived by Caputo, consists of paying the debt for energy subsidies — with a 50% write-off — via a dollar-denominated bond, the AE38. The debt totals AR$1,100 billion (US$1.2 billion at the official rate, US$1 billion at the MEP rate), the resolution says. Court annuls ex-cop’s conviction for shooting teen who stabbed tourist in La Boca
A Buenos Aires court has annulled the murder conviction of former police officer Luis Chocobar, who shot and killed a 17-year-old who had just stabbed a tourist in La Boca in 2017. The Buenos Aires City Chamber of Criminal Cassation said the arguments for the sentence were “unclear” and called for a new trial. Although Security Minister Patricia Bullrich celebrated the ruling, the decision does not mean that Chocobar has been acquitted. In 2021, Chocobar was convicted of aggravated homicide and abusive use of a firearm in breach of duty after shooting 17-year-old Juan Pablo Kukoc, who had mugged and stabbed a tourist in La Boca in 2017. Maradona’s long-lost 1986 Golden Ball goes up for auction
Diego Maradona’s 1986 World Cup Golden Ball award is going up for auction. It will be auctioned on June 6 by French auction house Aguttes. The ball-shaped trophy resembles the Azteca, the ball used during the 1986 World Cup, and was authenticated by the auction house by matching it with photographs from the 1986 award ceremony. Maradona won the Golden Ball after leading Argentina to its second World Cup title. The award is not to be confused with the Ballon d’Or, given by French football magazine France Football since 1956.

Death toll from southern Brazil rainfall rises to 78, many still missing
The death toll from heavy rains that have caused flooding in Brazil’s southern state of Rio Grande do Sul has risen to at least 78, local authorities said on Sunday, with more than 115,000 people displaced. The death toll could still substantially increase as 105 people were reported missing on Sunday, up from about 70 the prior day, according to the state civil defense authority.
