ContenciosoIf you want translation troubles, you can trust any news that has anything to do with the judiciary — we’ve mentioned the dreaded intervenido before. Fingir demenciaThis was a strong contender for our words and phrases of 2023 because it was so ubiquitous last year. The literal translation is “pretend like you have dementia” — pretty tough for anyone who has seen it up close. PiscuíThis is uncomplicated but worth it: Facundo called me piscuí and I thought it was just the cutest thing. Share your thoughts and translation hang-ups with us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram!

The government on Thursday removed the PAIS tax on imported items for use in manufacturing products destined for export. On July 24, the previous government broadened the reach of the tax so that it applied to all imported goods, including industrial inputs and raw materials. “The PAIS tax was also paid when the product is exported,” he said. However, a source from Tierra del Fuego’s government told the Télam news agency that this was not the case. The PAIS tax was the tax with the highest growth in 2023, with an increase of 335.5% compared to last year.

The Argentine government is analyzing a debt swap with banks operating in the country for the entirety of its 2024 maturities: AR$57.5 trillion (US$71 billion at the official rate). “It is a good sign for the markets because it removes all debt maturities [for 2024],” the bank source said. Flybondi, which became the first low-cost carrier to operate in Argentina in 2016, has already started flying the Buenos Aires-Mar del Plata route. It is the first time a low-cost airline has run the route, and the first flight was 90% full, according to a statement by the ministry. Brazilian carrier GOL will open a new international route between Buenos Aires and Bogotá, Colombia, starting in April. The ministry said the “open skies” policy aimed to achieve “greater competition in the markets, reach new low-cost routes and promote a wide offering of flights at affordable prices.”Milei’s mega-decree repealed national air travel regulations requiring at least half of national flights to be operated by Argentina’s state-owned flagship carrier. Mapuche leader Facundo Jones Huala was extradited to Chile on Thursday morning to complete a nine-year prison sentence, of which he still has six months left to serve. In 2018, a criminal court in the Chilean city of Valdivia convicted Jones Huala of arson for an attack on a farm in 2013, as well as illegal possession of a weapon. Jones Huala’s lawyers insisted that their defense was hampered because the court did not allow them to present several pieces of evidence. However, their arguments were rejected and Argentina’s Supreme Court confirmed Jones Huala’s extradition in November — he held a 25-day dry hunger strike in protest. Jones Huala’s health is allegedly good and they added that he is in “high spirits” with an attitude “in line with our political approach: they haven’t subdued us.”—with information from Télam

The National Labor Appeals Chamber issued another stay blocking President Javier Milei’s labor reforms included in an economic deregulation mega-decree, which went into effect last week. The ruling also emphasizes the Chamber’s jurisdiction over labor law, following a government request for the issue to be addressed in another court. Meanwhile, the National Labor Appeals Chamber indirectly addressed the government’s demand in its second stay, emphasizing that it had jurisdiction over these injunctions because they pertain to labor matters and were filed by unions. The government will appeal the stay issued on Wednesday before the Supreme Court. Many other injunctions have been filed against Milei’s DNU since he announced it on December 20.

Argentina’s football clubs have long been run as nonprofit civil associations, giving members the right to vote for who they want to run their local team. But most professional football clubs reject the model, and including SADs would violate the statutes of some of the biggest organizations in Argentine football. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) doesn’t allow its member clubs to be private corporations; its statutes say they can only be non-profit civil associations. The issue affects all sports, although debate has focused on football clubs so far. To some in Argentine football, the decree should never have mentioned football clubs in the first place.
