Milei’s olive branch came on the heels of a grueling week for the government. All but one of Argentina’s governors backed Torres, escalating Milei’s wrath against them and worsening an already contentious relationship. Two days after Torres’ statement, Security Minister and PRO president Patricia Bullrich released a statement backing Milei. It should also be noted that Milei’s signature “omnibus bill” failed to garner support from provincial lawmakers in Congress. The main sticking point was how federal taxes were going to be shared — the same issue that sparked the feud between Governor Torres and Milei last week.

Argentina femicides keep rising after 2023 record, observatory says
Femicides in Argentina, already at a record level last year, have increased further in the first two months of 2024, a report from a local observatory on Friday showed, with more than one killing per day underscoring the deadly threat to women. The rise, of almost 10%, comes after Argentina saw a record 322 femicides last year according to separate official figures, amid rising poverty, political uncertainty and inflation decimating the population’s purchasing power. President Javier Milei dismantled the country’s women’s ministry, moving those responsibilities to the Human Capital Ministry. Campaigners for the rights of women and girls are concerned this will hurt protections for women. “What we are seeing, unfortunately, is that violence against women has been exacerbated,” said Ada Beatriz Rico, director of the observatory that carried out the report.

Two men freed after 54 days in jail for X post mocking ex Jujuy governor
Two men who had been arrested for posting messages mocking former Jujuy governor Gerardo Morales and his wife, Tulia Snopek, were freed on Monday after spending 54 days in pretrial detention. Rumors surrounding this supposed affair have been circulating online and in local news outlets since the beginning of the year. The story originated after musician Mauro Coletti, a member of the Argentine folk group Los Tekis, had a car accident on October 6. Government to ban gender-neutral language in national public bodies
The Argentine government will ban the use of gender-neutral language in national public institutions, presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni said on Tuesday. The demand for gender-neutral language is prioritized by feminist, queer and nonbinary groups, who point out that the gender-binary language and the generic masculine erase their existence. Fernández, whose child is nonbinary, sometimes used gender-neutral language such as argentine in interviews. The Royal Academy of the Spanish Language (RAE) does not support gender-neutral language, as it does not consider the generic masculine to be a problem for gender equality. On Friday, Defense Ministry Luis Petri announced that he had banned gender-neutral language in the Armed Forces.

BA Province to take national government to Supreme Court in tax share dispute
Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof will take the national administration of President Javier Milei to the Supreme Court to demand that federal tax funding be restored to the province, he announced in a press conference on Monday afternoon. In decrees in Monday’s Official Gazette, the executive branch cut two funds that transferred tax revenues to the provinces. “Today, we instructed the state prosecutor of Buenos Aires Province to start judicial action in the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, and as a precautionary measure, to restore the funds they took from us,” Kicillof said in a press conference. “The fund is not for a governor or the government, it’s for the security of the people of Buenos Aires Province,” he said, to a round of applause. Chubut Governor Ignacio Torres (PRO) said Friday he would stop delivering oil and gas to the rest of the country unless his province receives its share of federal tax funds.
