Security Minister Patricia Bullrich, president of the right-wing PRO party, released a statement backing President Javier Milei on Sunday amid an unprecedented conflict with the country’s governors. However, the statement lacked the signatures of key party members, a sign that tensions between ruling coalition La Libertad Avanza (LLA) and PRO — its greatest political ally — appear to have reached boiling point. Milei called Torres’ warning a “Chavista threat” on Saturday, escalating a conflict which so far has no resolution in sight. All eight PRO governors plus Buenos Aires City Mayor Jorge Macri released a statement backing Torres on Friday. Mothers of Plaza de Mayo condemn ‘denialist’ government for canceling TV show
Every weekend for the past 16 years, the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo have hosted a TV show on Argentina’s TV Pública public channel. Madres de la Plaza had aired every Saturday since January 2008, showing interviews and news about the Mothers’ latest activities, including the historic Thursday marches around the Pirámide de Mayo monument in Plaza de Mayo. The decision to cancel their show did not come as a surprise, since Milei has been clear about his plans to shut down Argentina’s public media, the mothers said. The privatization of some of those public channels was included in Milei’s omnibus bill, which collapsed during congressional debate three weeks ago due to a lack of support from lawmakers. “We will continue [marching] around Plaza de Mayo, and we will see his damned government end.”

Teachers strike on first day of school in seven provinces, BA city
Teachers from seven provinces and Buenos Aires City will strike and march to demand fair wages and protest President Javier Milei’s decision to cut a national fund that contributes to teachers’ salaries. Chile risks repeat of deadly wildfires because of climate change
Deadly wildfires like those that burned through central Chile and killed at least 133 people this month will become more likely in the South American country as climate change makes the world hotter and drier, according to a report released on Thursday. The report found that neither global warming nor the El Nino climate phenomenon drove that recent increase in the HDWI during the fires, as that coastal region of Chile is actually cooling while temperatures are warming inland. But that will change with global warming, the scientists said. Temperatures are on track to rise up to 2.9 degrees Celsius (5.2 degrees Fahrenheit) this century, based on current climate pledges, according to the United Nations. The report’s authors also found that urban growth and land use change were big factors that led to the fires being so deadly.

Lawmakers to hold first meeting of new bicameral commission
Lawmakers will hold the first meeting of a congressional commission on Thursday that could discuss President Javier Milei’s controversial mega-decree, following a lengthy dispute over its composition under the new government. The Permanent Bicameral Legislative Procedure Commission is a parliamentary body composed of members of both chambers. The newly-appointed members will meet for the first time on Thursday to formally launch the commission and appoint its leaders. One-day train strike in Argentina as rail staff demand pay talks
The La Fraternidad railway workers’ union has been carrying out a 24-hour train strike since midnight that affects the entire railway service, except for long-distance transfers to Rosario, Mar del Plata, Tucumán, and Córdoba.
