Twenty nine years after the bombing that killed 85 people and left 300 wounded, Congress is now looking to pass a law to make July 18 a national mourning day. Ahead of the 30-year anniversary next year, deputies have passed a bill to honor the victims. People gathered to help the victims moments after the attack (July 18 1994). In speeches with a distinct electoral slant, Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and Economy Minister Sergio Massa appeared together at the launch of a pilot-training simulator by the national airline Aerolíneas Argentinas in Ezeiza. “I want to go back to what we defend when we defend Aerolíneas. The simulator in question is for Boeing 737 Max aircraft training and according to Aerolíneas will save the state USD$7 million a year. He highlighted its contribution to the National Treasury, saying that the airline saw its lowest level of losses last year, USD$246 million. “Someone should urgently invent a presidential simulator and input Argentina’s numbers and problems, not those of Switzerland or Sweden or Norway,” she said.

President Alberto Fernández and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on energy co-operation that seeks to boost energy trade between Argentina and the European Union. Inked just before the start of the EU-CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) summit, the memorandum states that both parties will support investment to increase energy trade between Argentina and the EU. The possibility of an energy memorandum between Argentina and the EU first emerged during bilateral talks on energy in Buenos Aires in June 2022. While the European bloc was facing an energy crisis because of the war in Ukraine, Argentina was seeking to develop its reputation as a sustainable and trustworthy energy provider, the Presidency source said. This MoU comes a month after Fernández and von der Leyen signed a memorandum to expand cooperation on sustainable value chains of critical raw materials.

Every Sunday, I try to group our translation troubles under a theme, but sometimes — most of the time — the news cycle and indeed life doesn’t work that way. This week it came up in the context of presidential hopeful Patricia Bullrich’s research institute being intervenido or “intervened by” the government. The Herald has consistently used the word travesti in articles despite the fact that its direct English translation is a slur — the thing is, it was a slur in Spanish too. Obviously, “you didn’t wrinkle” was not an option and we went with “didn’t waver.” However, two textile-related alternatives come to mind. The group had flags, a big folder with information that they had allegedly been investigating, and an eagerness to be part of the human rights movement in Argentina. According to a years-long investigation, Martínez Moreira is not a lawyer, a sociologist, nor a son of desaparecidos. Adrián Martínez Moreira is not even his real name. “Two names came up — Adrián Martínez Moreira and a lawyer, Omar García. According to Efrón, the case impacted the human rights movement, leading to fights among different members.

Paraguay “would love” to do more trade with China, but Taiwan offers the best bet for moving the largely agricultural economy up the value chain, the country’s president-elect Santiago Pena said on Saturday on a visit to Taipei. Paraguay is the last South American country with formal relations with Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory. Honduras ended decades of ties in favor of Beijing this year, and only 13 countries now recognise Taiwan. “We have no constraints on doing trade with China. We would love to do more trade with the PRC,” he said, referring to the People’s Republic of China.

June’s monthly inflation fell by 1.8 percentage points to 6%, below market expectations. Increases to regulated prices will come into play, although food prices — which have the greatest impact on the index — are still growing by less than in previous months. “In these past two weeks of July, food price inflation continued downward (an average 5% in the last four weeks) but with a high proportion of products on the rise,” explained sources from the consultancy LCG. Expectations of a new administration and future changes in relative prices will continue to keep inflation rates high. “Market expectations set the lowest base at 7%, although new impulses could happen if there is a broader exchange rate correction after the primary elections (PASO).”Originally published in Ambito.com

Negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over the fifth review of Argentina’s economic program are “pretty close” to finishing, according to Economy Minister and presidential candidate Sergio Massa. IMF spokesperson Julie Kozack refused to answer whether the lender and Argentina will reach a deal before the end of July when the board is expected to go into recess. “I will just repeat that the teams are working intensively with a view to making progress and completing the fifth review,” she said at a briefing in Washington DC when a journalist asked her about the negotiation time frame. The deal includes an economic program that Argentina must comply with to receive disbursements every three months, which the government uses to pay the previous debt. The IMF staff’s upcoming fifth review of the program will evaluate Argentina’s performance until March.

DNA tests have confirmed that Cecilia Strzyzowski’s blood was found at her in-laws’ home — they are currently in pre-trial detention with their son and four other alleged collaborators for her murder. The Senas are a politically powerful family and police raids uncovered evidence — including the blood samples now confirmed to belong to Strzyzowski — at one of their properties. Other samples came from fabric cut from a mattress that the Senas donated days after Strzyzowski went missing. Amnesty International, the international human rights watchdog, recently launched a campaign demanding justice for Strzyzowski and reacted to today’s news with a communiqué. Justice Minister Martín Soria ordered a six-month takeover of presidential candidate Patricia Bullrich’s research institute, contending that it is being illegally used to fund her political campaign. The NGO, the National Institute of Strategic Studies on Security (IEES, by its Spanish acronym) was founded in 2016 and is presided over by Bullrich. The bus system in Buenos Aires is a completely different story. This is just one of the many differences between the Los Angeles and Buenos Aires bus experiences. Before you’re allowed to pay your fee, you have to tell the bus driver exactly which bus stop you’re getting off at: have the intersection of the street corners ready. There’s no such thing on the Buenos Aires bus. The terrifying efficiency and speed modeled by the Buenos Aires buses are the next step to achieving the American dream.

Latin America and the Caribbean received record flows of foreign direct investment (FDI) last year, a United Nations report showed on Monday, mostly into services, manufacturing and energy as spending recovered after the pandemic. The report by the U.N. Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) found that FDI, or income from cross-border asset purchases, surged 55% from 2021 to hit about US$225 billion last year, the highest level ever recorded. “FDI flows to the region had not surpassed US$200 billion since 2013, so the 2022 recovery marks a major investment milestone for the past decade,” ECLAC said in the report. Brazil, the region’s biggest economy, took the lion’s share of investments at 41%, while Mexico, the second largest, took 17%. Meanwhile, in a shift from 2021, new projects in fossil fuels and the auto sector surpassed those in renewable energy.
