By Valen Iricibar y Estefania PozzoCustoms has filed legal complaints against five companies for import scams, carrying out 38 raids in banks and businesses today across Buenos Aires and Mar del Plata in which two people were arrested. “I’ll simplify in a very colloquial way: they’re fake importers, sham portfolios which faked SIMIS, the earlier tools we used to import, with sham documentation, sham invoices, sham customs forms to send money abroad without importing anything,” said Guillermo Michel, head of Customs, in a press conference. Today’s official government communiqué mentioned 23 raids but sources close to the matter told the Herald that a total of 38 raids were carried out in banks and companies. The Herald reached out to two other banks who confirmed their involvement but did not want to comment directly on the matter. At the inauguration of the Néstor Kirchner gas pipeline, Economy Minister Sergio Massa thanked the private sector companies involved for carrying out the project “properly and on time”. Businesses approve of the work, too: energy sector sources expect greater gas production, with Argentina becoming an important regional actor. Argentina must find a public-private partnership model, which could be mixed works or private works, with the State in the essential role of regulating. Sources in the company say they have just finished two projects in Córdoba that will be key for the “future reversal of the Northern Pipeline”. There is a unanimous view among companies in the hydrocarbon sector, according to Luciano Fucello, country manager at oil and gas company NCS Multistage.

The literal translation of autogestión would be “self-regulation” or “self-management,” but it’s not just that. It makes us double-take almost every time because it is deceptively simple: espacio político could just be “political space” but then you look at it and go, wait, what exactly is a “political space”? Then go with that or make sure that there is ample background information for “political space” to overcome its ambiguity. Here we use “break your soul” to talk about a grueling effort and sacrifice, often for a cause that matters a lot to you. They got the shot, but we felt that something was lost when translating it to “show of unity.” There’s something subtly catty about “unity photo” that just felt like a shame to omit.

By Facundo Iglesia and Martina JaureguyThe first of three tranches of the Néstor Kirchner gas pipeline was officially launched today in Salliqueló, Buenos Aires province. “We will no longer import gas in ships because we’ll use the gas in our subsoil,” he said. The pipelineThe 573-kilometer-long pipeline’s path starts at the gas treatment plant in Tratayén, Neuquén, which is located at the heart of the Vaca Muerta shale oil and shale gas deposit. Savings will grow to US$4.2 billion for the whole of 2024, by replacing liquefied natural gas, gas from Bolivia, and liquid fuel imports, while increasing the availability of gas at competitive prices for industry, businesses, and homes. Vaca Muerta is the fourth-largest shale oil reservoir in the world and the second-largest shale gas reservoir.

As a lifelong fan raised by a football fanatic, Argentine football culture was almost mythic to me growing up. Last Sunday, we attended a Boca Juniors home match against Sarmiento, and it truly lived up to the hype surrounding Argentina football fans. How to get ticketsAs mentioned above, it is incredibly hard as a visitor to get into a Boca game. I instead realized that the Boca fans were whistling at them with a shrillness I didn’t think possible. Although the game itself took a while to pick up with a scoreless first half, if you have a chance to go to a Boca game it’ll be an unforgettable experience.

There’s also an official world competition with a panel of judges picking a winner from a blind taste test of over 300 samples. Alfajores typically feature a chocolate coating with vanilla cookies and a sweet dulce de leche filling, but each Argentine province has its own take. Mar del Plata, a coastal city in Buenos Aires province, is famous for its beachside chocolate alfajores and is the birthplace of the bougie brand Havanna. The mass-produced alfajor brands found in stores offer the entire spectrum of styles and sweet fillings. Financial analysts surveyed in June by Argentina’s Central Bank expect the country’s final 2023 inflation to total 142.4%, 5 points lower than what they forecasted in May. Their expected inflation rate for June is 7.3%. “New information suggesting that monthly inflation moderated even more when compared to May was released last month after REM participants provided their forecasts to the Central Bank,” the REM report said. It’s worth noting that REM participants started the year predicting a 0.5% growth for 2023, a statement made in January before the full impact of the historic drought was entirely known. The REM analysts also expect fixed-term deposits in July and August to surpass inflation and the crawling peg rate.

The long-distance and inner city bus strike that began Friday at midnight has been lifted, Economy Minister and presidential candidate Sergio Massa announced this afternoon at a press conference. “From 17:30, the strike will be lifted,” Massa said today in the Economy Ministry, joined by Transportation and Labor Ministers Diego Giuliano and Kelly Olmos, as well as Buenos Aires’ Transportation Minister Jorge D’Onofrio and representatives of five transportation unions. The Automobile and Tram Union (UTA, by its Spanish acronym) had called the strike in response to bus companies failing to pay what they said were “agreed salary raises,” according to a press release. The strike affected Greater Buenos Aires, as well as the city of La Plata and five other provinces: Corrientes, Entre Ríos, Santa Fe, Formosa, Misiones, and Tucumán. Earlier today, he called the companies “parasites of the state.”Public transport in Greater Buenos Aires was further complicated due to a surprise 4.30 a.m. strike on the Sarmiento train line, which connects BA city with the capital’s western outskirts.

Inflation in Argentina’s capital slowed to 7.1% in June from 7.5% in May, according to the city government statistics released on Friday. Food and non-alcoholic drinks influenced inflation the most, due to their weight on the general index, with a 5.8% monthly increase. Consulting firm Ecolatina calculated a 7.2% inflation rate for June in Greater Buenos Aires. For the rest of 2023, they forecast monthly inflation to average above 7%, with the inter-annual figure hitting at least 130% for the year as a whole. The National Institute of Statistics and Census (INDEC, by its Spanish initials) will publish the national inflation rate for June on July 13.

The Argentine Chamber of Deputies unanimously voted to repeal a 1924 law actively barring women from working a plethora of jobs, going so far as to forbid them from working nights. Although the law isn’t meaningfully enforced across the labor market, addressing the legal disparity is being celebrated as a step towards women having more rights. Lospennato presented one of the bills to repeal the law, which was merged with two others by ruling coalition Frente de Todos (FdT) deputies Vanesa Siley and Lucila Masin. “Our present-day makes us reassess those patriarchal stereotypes that translate to the working world as the discrimination that we as women live through and suffer,” said Siley when she addressed the house. She pointed out that although women currently work in jobs prohibited by the law, the legislation is often used to exclude women from certain job sectors, using dock workers as the prime example.
