Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday called upon the academics to align the education system with the youths' expectations and aspirations and stressed on revival of the SAARC to enhance regional academic cooperation. "Today, I feel very excited that academics at the highest level could get together in Dhaka. The chief adviser made the remarks while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the three-day "South Asian Regional Conference on State of Higher Education and Future Pathway (SARCHE 2026)" at a Dhaka hotel. Prof Yunus said review of those events will clarify what university education and education as a whole are really about, adding, this should be the core subject of discussion at the gathering. the chief adviser said.

Sudan paramilitary strike on southeastern city kills 27
Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces launched drones at an army base in the southeastern city of Sinja on Monday, killing 27 people, military and health sources told AFP. Sinja, the capital of Sennar state, lies around 300 kilometers southeast of Khartoum, along a strategic road connecting the national capital to the army-controlled east. The military source, speaking anonymously because they were not authorized to brief the media, said RSF drones “targeted the headquarters of the army’s 17th Infantry Division” in Sinja. Ibrahim al-Awad, the Sennar state health minister, said that the attack also wounded 73 people. One resident of Sinja told AFP that they “heard explosions and anti-aircraft fire.”The Sennar region had last been targeted by drones in October.

US urges citizens to leave Iran amid escalating unrest
The virtual US Embassy for Iran warned American citizens on Monday to leave the country immediately as nationwide protests escalate, reports Anadolu Agency. “Leave Iran now,” the embassy said in a security alert, urging US nationals to plan their departure without assistance from the US government. “If you cannot leave, find a secure location within your residence or another safe building,” the advisory added, reports UNB. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on “any and all” countries doing business with Iran amid the ongoing government crackdown on protests. “We’ll make a determination,” Trump said Sunday, adding that he receives hourly reports on Iran, without specifying when or how the US might act.

White House: Trump keeping Iran air strikes on the table
US President Donald Trump is considering air strikes on Iran to stop a crackdown on protesters, the White House said Monday, adding that people were being “killed on the streets.”But a channel for diplomacy remains open, with Iran taking a “far different tone” in private discussions with Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, said Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. “One thing President Trump is very good at is always keeping all of his options on the table. And air strikes would be one of the many, many options that are on the table for the commander in chief,” Leavitt told reporters outside the West Wing. Iran’s foreign ministry said earlier Monday that a channel of communication was open between its top diplomat Abbas Araghchi and Trump’s special envoy, despite a lack of diplomatic relations. Trump said on Sunday that the US military was considering “very strong options” against Iran, saying it “looks like” Tehran had crossed his previously stated red line of protesters being killed.

Russia strikes power plant, kills four in Ukraine barrage
KHARKIV, Ukraine, Jan 13, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Russia battered Ukraine with more than two dozen missiles and hundreds of drones early Tuesday, killing four people and pummelling another power plant, piling more pressure on Ukraine's brittle energy system. An AFP journalist in the eastern Kharkiv region, where four people were killed, saw firefighters battling a fire at a postal hub and rescue workers helping survivors by lamp light in freezing temperatures. "The world can respond to this Russian terror with new assistance packages for Ukraine," President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on social media. DTEK, Ukraine's largest energy provider, said Russian forces had struck one of its power plants, saying it was the eighth such attack since October. The operator did not reveal which of its plants was struck, but said Russia had attacked its power plants over 220 times since Moscow invaded Ukraine in 2022.

Jatrabari Police Station arrested 19 people on Monday and recovered 100 kg of ganja during the operation. Banani Police Station arrested 14 people the same day, seizing 16 kg of ganja. Kalabagan Police Station arrested one person involved in regular and previous cases, while Rupnagar Police Station arrested 14 people on Tuesday during a day-long drive. The operations were conducted as part of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP's) ongoing efforts to curb crime and ensure public safety in the capital.

NHRC selection panel formed to recommend chairperson, commissioners
DHAKA, Jan 13, 2026 (BSS) - The government has formed a six-member selection committee headed by Appellate Division Justice Farah Mahbub to make recommendation for appointments to the vacant posts of chairperson and commissioners of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). Law and Justice Division issued a gazette in this connection on January 12. "Under Section 7 of the National Human Rights Commission Ordinance, 2025, a selection committee has been constituted with the following members to make recommendations for appointments to the vacant posts of Chairperson and Commissioners of the National Human Rights Commission," the gazette said. The other members of the selection committee are: Cabinet Secretary; Professor Dr Shahnaz Huda of the University of Dhaka's Law Department; Professor Dr Abdul Hasib Chowdhury, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of BUET; a journalist with experience in human rights reporting, nominated by the President of the National Press Club or their designate; and former Additional Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department, Kubleshawr Tripura. Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division will provide secretarial assistance to the committee and the order will come into effect immediately.

Govt. to procure 1 crore liters of soybean oil, 40,000 MTs fertilizer
DHAKA, Jan 13, 2026 (BSS) – The government today approved separate proposals for procuring one crore liters of refined soybean oil and 40,000 metric tons of fertilizer to meet the growing demand for the country. During the meeting, a total of four purchase proposals from different ministries and divisions namely from the Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Industries, and the Road Transport and Highways Division were approved. Following a proposal from the Ministry of Commerce, the government would procure one crore litres of refined soybean oil through the local Open Tender Method (National) method from Sonargaon Seeds Crushing Mills Ltd., Dhaka with around Taka 180.85 crore with the per liter price at Taka 180.85. The project is being implemented by the Roads and Highways Department with joint financing from the Government of Bangladesh and the OPEC Fund. After detailed discussions, the work of Package No: PW-01 was awarded to the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), China with a total cost of Taka 899.62 crore.

BNP leader dies after detention in Chuadanga joint forces operation
Shamsuzzaman Dablu, general secretary of Jibannagar Municipal BNP, died shortly after being detained during a joint forces operation in Chuadanga. Following news of his death, BNP activists gathered outside Jibannagar Upazila Health Complex on Tuesday morning. Police, in the presence of an executive magistrate, conducted an inquest on Dablu’s body at the health complex. “The level of torture was so severe that Shamsuzzaman Dablu could not endure it and died,” he said. Dablu was detained from his business, Hafiza Pharmacy, located in front of the health complex, and later taken to the hospital.

In many parts of Bangladesh, particularly in rural and underdeveloped areas, internet access is slow, intermittent, or simply non-existent. Universal internet access is now an essential aspect of modern life. Without widespread access, large sections of the population remain excluded from services and opportunities that increasingly exist online. Internet connectivity policies must, therefore, complement this push for speed with the urgent need for inclusion.

ICT publishes full verdict sentencing Hasina, Kamal to death
Earlier, on November 17 last year, Tribunal-1 sentenced Sheikh Hasina and Kamal to death by hanging along with life imprisonment, and ordered the confiscation of all their assets within the country. For these acts, Sheikh Hasina and Kamal were sentenced to life imprisonment. The first involved a phone conversation on July 18, 2024, between Sheikh Hasina, former Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Fazle Noor Taposh, and Jasad president Hasanul Haq Inu. According to the verdict, Sheikh Hasina instructed the use of drones to identify protesters’ locations and ordered killings using helicopters and lethal weapons. For the offences under Charge No 2, Sheikh Hasina and Kamal were sentenced to death.
