Indian weather agency predicts that the cyclonic storm may develop into a severe cycloneThe depression over southwest Bay of Bengal and its adjacent areas has intensified into a deep depression. According to a special weather bulletin issued by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, or BMD, the deep depression was located 2,025km south-southwest of Chattogram seaport, 1,960km south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar seaport, 1,940km south-southwest of Mongla seaport, and 1,925km south-southwest of Payra seaport on Tuesday afternoon. With sustained winds of up to 50 kmph, and gusts reaching 60 kmph, the deep depression is expected to move west-northwestward and gather strength, according to meteorologists. Fishing vessels and trawlers operating in the northern Bay of Bengal and adjacent deep-sea areas have been advised to navigate cautiously and remain near the coast until further notice. In addition, nighttime temperatures may drop slightly across Bangladesh, and daytime temperatures may remain unchanged.

On Monday afternoon, Fine Art Department students demonstrated in front of the university’s new registrar building, demanding the resumption of suspended construction work. Witnesses reported that Fine Art students had a discussion with the administration after a point of their protest at the scene demanding the resumption of the building’s construction. The construction of the Fine Art building began in June this year with joint funding from Bangladesh and India. Raid Hossain, a student from the Fine Art department's 50th batch who took part in the protest supporting the construction, said: "We are peacefully protesting to resume the building’s construction. For this, the culprits of Awami League such as Fine Art teacher MM Maizuddin must be brought to justice."

JICA provides Tk 3,147cr for two projectsDHAKA, Nov 26, 2024 (BSS) - The Bangladesh government has signed two loan agreements with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for construction of Jamuna Railway Bridge Construction Project (III) and Chattogram Sewerage System Development Project (engineering service). Under the agreements, JICA will provide a total of 39,902 million yen (equivalent to 3,147 crore Taka) for the Jamuna Railway Bridge Construction (III) and Chattogram Sewerage System Development Project (Engineering Service). The loan agreement signed for Jamuna Railway Bridge (III) is for the third tranche of the loan. The picturesque 4.8 km dedicated railway bridge runs over the Jamuna River parallel to the existing Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge. The Chattogram Sewerage System Development Project will focus on Catchment 2 and Catchment 4 (Kalurghat and East Bakalia) out of a total of six catchments.

Hundreds of people from the Hindu community gathered outside the court premises to stage protests after Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a prominent monk of ISKON Bangladesh, was sent to jail on charges of sedition. The protestors blocked the road below the court building and even gathered around the prison van carrying Chinmoy Das. According to Bangladesh's news website bdnews24.com, the monk was escorted into the prison van guarded by the police at around 12:15 PM, when his supporters started the protest and surrounded the prison van carrying him. The security forces resorted to lathi charge to disperse the agitating crowd to maintain law and order. Dhaka Metropolitan Hifazat-e Islam President Zunaid Al Habib submitted the complaint to the chief prosecutor of the tribunal on Tuesday. Tribunal prosecutor BM Sultan Mahmud said the complaint had been lodged but could not provide the names of the other suspects immediately. Supreme Court lawyer Gazi MH Tamim - currently an ICT prosecutor - filed the complaint at the tribunal’s investigation agency office in Dhanmondi. Hifazat-e Islam was formed back in 2010 in opposition to women’s development and education policies. The 24-member advisory council of the interim government also include former Hifazat-e Islam Nayeb-e-Amir AFM Khalid Hasan, a Sunni Deobandi Islamic scholar as religious affairs advisor.
