The Bangladesh Bank has formally initiated the merger process of five Shariah-based banks that have been under discussion. Police remind public of reward for weapons stolen during July Uprising as polls approachAs the national elections draw near, the Police Headquarters has renewed its call for information on weapons and ammunition looted during the July Uprising, reminding the public of the government’s earlier reward announcement. Information leading to the recovery of a pistol or shotgun will carry a Tk 50,000 reward, while each recovered bullet will fetch Tk 500. Police stations and structures were set ablaze, vehicles torched, and large quantities of arms and ammunition looted. A fire has broken out on the ground floor of a 14-storey building in the Kaderabad Housing area of Dhala’s Mohammadpur. Fire Service Duty Officer Rozina Akhter said firefighters rushed to the scene and brought the flames under control by 12:30 pm. “The Fire Service took a child to the hospital after she fell ill due to the smoke,” she said. Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdho, the twin brother of Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho who was killed in the July Uprising, has joined the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He joined the party on Tuesday night at the BNP chairperson’s office in Gulshan after submitting the membership form to Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman joined the event virtually from London and welcomed Snigdho to the party. Mugdho, a student of the Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), was killed on Jul 18 last year in Uttara’s Azampur during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement while distributing water to the protesters. A law graduate from Southeast University, Snigdho is currently serving as the deputy chief national commissioner of Bangladesh Scouts.

India's Financial Crime Agency has frozen 75 billion rupees (US$ 853 million) worth of properties linked to companies of the Reliance Anil Ambani Group as part of a money-laundering probe, it said in a statement on Monday. The troubled conglomerate is owned by the younger brother of billionaire Mukesh Ambani. Reliance Infrastructure, another Anil Ambani Group company, said there was no impact on its operations, shareholders and employees from the ED's action. Investigators have detected the "fraudulent diversion of public money" by entities including Reliance Group-controlled companies Reliance Home Finance Ltd and Reliance Commercial Finance Ltd, the ED said. ED said Reliance Communications Ltd and its group companies diverted more than 136 billion rupees through loan "evergreening", a practice where new loans are given to stressed borrowers to enable them to repay existing loans.

The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) has fined former IFIC Bank managing director Shah Alam Sarwar Tk 50 million after confirming “fraudulent practices” in the promotion of the “IFIC Amar Bond”. Although the bond was issued under the name of a housing company, Shreepur Township Limited, it was promoted publicly as the “IFIC Amar Bond”. Investors were “misled” to believe that IFIC Bank had issued the bond directly, while the bank was only a guarantor. Shreepur Township Limited collected funds using the bank’s name,” BSEC said. Information Advisor Mahfuj Alam has said the government will initiate the digitisation of Bangladesh’s oldest libraries, including the historic Rammala Library in Cumilla. He made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon while visiting the Rammala Library at Ishwar Pathsala Maheshangan in Kandirpar. Mahfuj noted that the Rammala Library is Bangladesh’s third or fourth oldest manuscript archive, holding one of the largest collections of ancient manuscripts after Dhaka University and Varendra University. He observed that many manuscripts were in a “deteriorating state”, making digitisation “essential” to preserve palm-leaf manuscripts and other rare books. According to the Rammala Library authorities, the collection currently holds more than 8,500 manuscripts and rare books, making it one of the oldest archives in the Indian subcontinent.
