Toronto Police Service identified Toronto man Liam Keddy, 41, as the victim to a fatal stabbing that happened at a men's shelter on Saturday. In a news release Monday, police identified the victim as 41-year-old Toronto man Liam Keddy. He was a resident at a 74-bed men's shelter operated by Homes First. A 25-year-old Toronto man, who was also a resident of the shelter according to First Homes, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

A study is revealing some of the challenges that electric vehicles will pose to northern power grids — and it’ll likely be revised now that Canada has a plan for phasing out the sale of gas-powered cars and trucks. “At no point in our studies did we consider 100 per cent electric vehicle adoption,” said Michael Ross, a researcher at Yukon University who is leading the study. So far, it’s showing some of the ways residential power grids will be strained if people in those neighbourhoods add Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations to their homes, he said. Faster charging needs more powerJay Massie, the vice president of northern development and Indigenous relations for ATCO Electric, said ATCO already has a “good understanding” of what electrification will do to northern power grids. Ross said some transformers are “underrated,” meaning they weren’t designed to have a lot of electric vehicles integrated into them.

Emergency services were alerted about the three-alarm fire at an apartment building on Chemin de la Côte-Saint-Luc at 10:10 p.m. Sunday night. A 36-year-old man and his five-year-old son were found unconscious at the scene and taken to hospital in critical condition. Police say they believe the cause was accidental and are investigating.

Looking ahead to 2024, Auchterlonie said he thinks the pressure will continue to mount, and Canadians are “overly comfortable” about their safety as the world changes. “We are in the middle of this and I’m not sure everybody understands that the security and defence situation globally has deteriorated significantly,” he said. At the same time, Canada has pledged to boost its presence on NATO’s eastern flank in Latvia and in the Indo-Pacific. Canadian military members have also been called upon to help with recovery from natural disasters and extreme weather here at home at an unprecedented rate in recent years. In that instance the military was the force of last resort, Auchterlonie said, and had the specialized equipment needed.
