By Jonathan StempelJan 30 (Reuters) - A federal judge signaled on Friday she may dismiss a lawsuit by Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup xAI (XAAI.PVT)accusing Sam Altman's rival OpenAI (OPAI.PVT)of stealing trade secrets to gain an unfair advantage in developing AI technology. U.S. District Judge Rita Lin in San Francisco said her "tentative view" is to grant OpenAI's motion to dismiss xAI's lawsuit, pending oral arguments on February 3. Lawyers for xAI and OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Musk's startup sued OpenAI in September, accusing it of hiring xAI employees away to obtain confidential information related to the AI chatbot Grok. Lin also said it was not plausible to infer from xAI's complaint that OpenAI used xAI's trade secrets, or the former xAI employees used them on the job after joining OpenAI.

But by far the most interesting part of Calandra’s junket, from an Ontario parent’s point of view, was certainly his visit to London’s Michaela Community School. What that might mean for Ontario schools is much less clear; “nothing” is too plausible an answer. The school operates as a conscious repudiation of modern educational fads and an embrace of the old school: “private school ethos — no fees” is an unofficial motto. But Ontario parents can’t have any of this — except as a sort of background influence. If parents in London, England have that option, why can’t parents in London, Ont.?

CALGARY — Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre will speak to party faithful on Friday evening in Calgary ahead of a leadership review that will decide his future . Poilievre will not only be trying to convince party members to cast a ballot in favour of keeping him on as leader as the party, but also turning the page on a difficult year for the party. A year ago, after the resignation of former prime minister Justin Trudeau, the Conservative party saw its massive polling lead crumble in the face of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s ascension as the new Liberal leader. In the subsequent April federal election, the party lost handily to Carney, while Poilievre lost his Ottawa-area seat, forcing him to run in an August byelection in rural Alberta. Poilievre is set to speak at 8:30 p.m.

OTTAWA — British Columbia Premier David Eby sparked a firestorm of legal speculation about the foreign outreach of Alberta separatists on Thursday when he called the activities “treason” ahead of a first ministers’ meeting in Ottawa. Advertisement AdvertisementAdvertisement AdvertisementSome countries have criminal laws proscribing contact between unauthorized persons and foreign officials. However, there is no equivalent law in Canada barring private individuals from engaging in such communication. Advertisement AdvertisementAdvertisement AdvertisementEby isn’t the first public figure to use the word “treason” to characterize the group’s activities. Davies said he’s also taken steps to ensure he stays on the right side of relevant Canadian laws.

PARIS, Jan 30 (Reuters) - China has reduced proposed tariffs on certain dairy products from the European Union as it concludes an anti-subsidy investigation widely seen as retaliation for EU levies on Chinese electric cars, two European industry associations said. In final tariffs communicated to the European side, China is proposing additional duties of up to 11.7%, compared with a maximum rate of 42.7% in provisional duties announced in December, the European Dairy Association and Eucolait told Reuters. The European Commission and the Chinese Ministry of Commerce could not be immediately reached outside working hours. “That’s the question.”Kiano Vafaeian died by MAID on Dec. 30 in a Vancouver funeral home. Three years ago, Vafaeian’s mother, Margaret Marsilla, intervened to prevent her then 23-year-old son’s planned MAID death at a Toronto clinic. After her daughter discovered an email confirming the scheduled date of death, Marsilla launched a social media campaign and online petition identifying the doctor, who later postponed, then pulled, his approval. Under Canada’s MAID law, those seeking an assisted death are assigned either Track 1, meaning they have a terminal illness and their natural death is reasonably foreseeable, or Track 2 — death is not reasonably foreseeable. It’s not known if the doctors assessed him for only a Track 1 death, or also thought he did not meet the criteria for Track 2.

After a striking speech at Davos, Mark Carney opted for a different tone as he supported the Canadian film industry in Ottawa. “Do the leg thing,” Carney asked actor Hudson Williams as they stood together to take photos on Thursday night, The Guardian reports. Williams is a B.C.-born actor and one of the lead stars of the popular HBO ice hockey drama, Heated Rivalry. Mark Carney received worldwide praise for his speech at Davos, in which he threw down the gauntlet against Donald J. Trump’s destructive politics. For all his intelligence and credentials, Carney simply doesn’t know much about the country he governs. The press reaction in Quebec has been savage, and the province’s leading politicians have already denounced it in strident terms. And in the words of Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet, Carney’s speech “launched the referendum campaign” for Quebec’s separation from Canada. Yuan Yi Zhu is an assistant professor at Leiden University and former policy advisor to Conservative party Leader Pierre Poilievre.

With Cowboys new defensive coordinator Christian Parker in the building and already getting to work building his staff, I am sure many are wondering what we should expect to see from his defense? He has done nothing but made players in the secondary thrive while he was the coach in Denver and with the Eagles. As of right now, it might be hard to exactly pinpoint what type of defense Parker will run with Dallas because personnel does matter, but I was reading some other pieces and I got some good ideas. He worked under him both with the Broncos and the Eagles as the secondary coach. Defensively, Philadelphia had the #1 defense in yards allowed, was #1 against the pass and sixth in takeaways.

Cookbook author, publisher and culinary guide Katie Parla has called Rome home for more than 20 years. It’s a different Rome than 2026, and I wanted to give that full spectrum of what we eat in Rome — how we navigate food spaces,” she says. Along with a broadened sense of geography, Parla also sets out to expand people’s idea of what Roman food is. Add the chicken, skin side down, increase the heat to medium, and cook until browned on all sides, 10 to 12 minutes. Recipes and images excerpted from Rome: A Culinary History, Cookbook, and Field Guide to the Flavors that Built a City by Katie Parla.

Last week I dropped my way-too-early predictions for the Dallas Cowboys in 2026. The Giants might be the only road win Dallas comes away with in 2026. Dallas plays at Houston, Indianapolis, the Rams, Seattle, Green Bay, Philadelphia, and Washington in 2026 and will probably lose all of them. That will put Dallas at 5-12 and likely put Brian Schottenheimer on the hot seat. Could Dallas, assuming a huge improvement on defense, finish the 2026 season with a winning record?
