Last year marked a turning point in Toronto's housing market, as prices started to trend down again following a pandemic-induced boost. More broadly, housing markets in southern Ontario and parts of B.C. "Quebec City was the most underpriced housing market in North America," Cathcart said. Where the housing market goes next hinges partly on the direction of the Canadian economy, according to Hogue.

The dragon in the grid: Limiting China’s influence in Europe’s energy system
Any leakage of such data would represent a major weakness for Europe’s energy system as a whole. The State Grid of China and China Southern Power Grid, both state-owned enterprises and major investors in Europe’s energy grid, are subject to domestic procurement rules favouring Chinese providers. The risks posed by Chinese inverters to Europe’s energy system echo earlier concerns about Huawei’s role in 5G telecoms networks. Such concerns are also relevant to other connected devices that increasingly underpin the energy system, from smart meters to smart heating. Individual Member States should also outline clear procurement guidelines for Chinese energy technologies, particularly in military-relevant energy infrastructure.

No tariff relief in sight as Carney re-ups old agreements with Chinese government on energy, lumber
Industry Minister Mélanie Joly noted Thursday that trade discussions with the Chinese are “more predictable and stable” than with Canada’s southern neighbour. But there was no sign of tariff relief on Chinese electric vehicles or Canadian canola from either country on the first full day of Carney’s trip. The six MOUs signed Thursday cover a range of industries such as energy, lumber, policing and public safety, culture and tourism. The energy MOU re-upped a 2017 memorandum on energy cooperation and another on nuclear energy signed in 2014. “They are very clear that they would like more Canadian energy products,” Energy Minister Tim Hodgson told reporters Thursday evening.

A Sapotaweyak Cree Nation mother says her 16-year-old daughter has "a long way to recovery" after suffering broken bones when a school bus crashed along an icy stretch of rural Manitoba highway on Tuesday. RCMP said preliminary details suggest the bus driver lost control while trying to pass another bus. Christa Copapay said her daughter Kylee has "got a long way to recovery" after breaking two vertebrae during the crash. He said he is "open to the conversation" around whether seatbelts should be required on school buses in future. Last month, the Opposition Progressive Conservatives introduced a private member's bill calling for mandatory seatbelt use on new school buses in the province.

A union leader who represents Ford workers in Windsor — where F-150 engines are made — takes issue with those comments. During an appearance at a Michigan Ford plant, Trump said the U.S. doesn't need Canadian cars. Just across the border in Windsor, Ont., Ford workers make engines that power Ford F-150 trucks, along with Super Duty models and the Mustang. During his appearance at the plant, Trump also called the Canada-United States-Mexico trade pact "irrelevant."

ArcelorMittal Dofasco has quietly extended its timeline by 22 years to phase out coal for "decarbonized" steelmaking, says a federal government document, aiming for 2050 instead of 2028. It was posted after the U.S. first imposed tariffs on Canadian steel and shortly before the federal election. ArcelorMittal Dofasco said in a statement it has extended the timeline but its "ambitions and intentions" have not changed. Former prime minister Justin Trudeau was among those in attendance for the groundbreaking ceremony at ArcelorMittal Dofasco on Oct. 13, 2022. But last year, the project was amended to say Dofasco will replace its furnaces and coke plants but doesn’t specify with what.

Officer testifies about videos examined early in double-murder case
An RCMP officer testified Wednesday that in the early stages of a double-murder case, he examined hours of surveillance footage and logged vehicles driven through two major Dieppe intersections. Baker faces two counts of first-degree murder alleging he killed Bernard Saulnier and his wife, Rose-Marie Saulnier, on Sept. 7, 2019 in Dieppe. Martel testified he had various roles in the investigation, including seeking camera footage from near the couple's Amirault Street home. An officer testified Monday that a grey Hyundai Sonata, which had been reported stolen in Fredericton, was found abandoned in Moncton on Sept. 30, 2019. The jury heard it was found near where Trevors lived.
