The Canadian Armed Forces would need to buy 72 Gripen fighter jets and six GlobalEye surveillance aircraft for Swedish manufacturer Saab to deliver on its pledge of creating 12,600 jobs in Canada, CBC News has learned. Saab confirmed that the promise of 12,600 jobs is linked to the sale of Gripen and GlobalEye aircraft to Canada. To create more than 10,000 direct and indirect jobs in Canada, Saab plans production centres in Ontario and Quebec with a pan-Canadian supplier network. Purchasing a Gripen fleet was the top choice for supporters of the NDP (60 per cent) and the Liberal Party (51 per cent). After running a competition between the F-35 and the Gripen, the government of Canada opted for the F-35 in 2023.

So I'm delighted to announce today another significant investment in local public service journalism in communities where CBC has little to no presence. This year, CBC News will add 33 local journalists and create 11 new bureaus, increasing its Canadian footprint from 66 to 77 locations. Taken together, it's a historic investment in local journalism by the CBC. It was an iconic image: A photogenic young Iranian woman filmed herself lighting a cigarette with a picture of Iran’s leader, an evocative protest against the misogynistic clerics who run Iran. Social media fans called her “iconic” and “cool,” and praised her bravery: “Young Iranian women are leading the revolution against the Islamic regime,” said one user who shared the short video. Advertisement AdvertisementAdvertisement AdvertisementIt wasn’t initially clear where the video was taken; it showed snow and a suburban building behind her. “It was my hero and saved me from the Islamic regime. “I only hope for the removal of the Islamic regime, and replacement with a democratic government that brings peace and security to my people.”She is optimistic as well as hopeful.

The two-part report analyzed 2,789 CBC news articles published between October 7, 2023 and June 7, 2025, examining the CBC's online coverage of the Israel-Hamas war. Innohives' research concluded that the CBC's coverage of the Israel-Hamas war demonstrated significant imbalance in sympathy, challenging its commitment to its own Journalistic Standards and Practices. "The bias, which we think is clearly demonstrated by the research being released today, should concern all Canadians," said Amanda Eskenasi, Director of Education at HRCCO and author of the HRCCO report. It contributes to a culture that dehumanizes Jews and dismisses Jewish suffering, allowing bad actors to rationalize or excuse antisemitism, eroding the moral barrier against antisemitic violence." A Nova Scotia man who served 35 years for the violent slaying of a 12-year-old Ontario girl he had raped had his day parole extended last month and continues to live in the Halifax area, according to the Parole Board of Canada. Prior to that, the board noted Worth had participated in “numerous Escorted Temporary Absences (ETAs)” and three unescorted absences. “Your ability to apply the skills learned through programming is reflected in your successful period of day parole, which serves as evidence of measurable progress,” it wrote. Next, Worth’s sister and brother-in-law told police he’d admitted to killing someone and was worried someone would find the body. In a post on the NDP’s Reddit page, Ashton received questions about climate change, his French-language skills, fossil fuels and employment, among other topics. He appeared to respond via his Reddit account under the username Rob-Ashton-NDP. He is facing off against Heather McPherson, Tony McQuail, Avi Lewis and Tanille Johnston in the NDP leadership race. In a separate AMA by McQuail on Monday, a user asked him the same question about AI that Ashton was asked about. “We also have someone to take notes at our Team Tony meetings,” he said.

In 2026, interior design won’t likely be a site of radical change or shocking reveals. A standout trend for 2026, he says, is the colour story: deep greens, burgundies and strong blues are creating a richer, moodier palette. The same desire for grounded, quietly expressive spaces plays out in Benjamin Moore’s 2026 Colour of the Year, Silhouette, an espresso-charcoal hybrid. “It brings a sense of soft, sophisticated comfort home,” says Sharon Grech, a media spokesperson in Colour Marketing and Design at Benjamin Moore. Blue kitchen cabinetry is high on the 2026 trend list, according to designer Arren Williams.

New home sales across Ontario have fallen far below historic norms, with only approximately 15,000 units sold in 2025. Correspondingly, that total construction activity could decline dramatically, from approximately $31.7 billion in 2024 to just $10.4 billion by 2030. At today’s historically low sales levels, the foregone revenue for the province would be approximately $472 million per year. At traditional sales volumes, it would rise to roughly $1.4 billion annually – which is far less than the predicted fiscal consequences outlined above. It is a request to tax housing less so that it becomes more attainable, while ensuring the industry remains viable enough to continue contributing to public coffers.
