About 20 weather warnings in place across country amid rain, snow and cold
About 20 weather warnings from Environment Canada are set to remain in effect for swaths of the country over the weekend, as the weather agency forecasts more snowfall, blizzards, freezing rain, rain and shivering temperatures from coast to coast. Marianna Greenhough, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, says the best thing Canadians can do is be aware of the warnings.

Toronto could see between 20 and 40 millimetres of rain Sunday afternoon, Environment Canada says. Environment Canada also issued a yellow warning for freezing rain Sunday, noting it could lead to icy surfaces. But Environment Canada said Torontonians should expect strong winds Monday. "We’re monitoring the weather as rain and freezing rain move across the Greater Toronto Area," Toronto Pearson said in the post. Environment Canada recommends securing loose objects.

Trump welcomes 'very brave' Zelenskyy to Florida for peace talks after call with Putin
U.S. President Donald Trump said Sunday he believes both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin truly want peace, as he welcomed the "brave" Ukrainian leader for talks at his Florida resort. Before Zelenskyy arrived, Trump spoke with Putin by phone for more than an hour, and planned to speak with him again soon after. Greeting Zelenskyy at Mar-a-Lago, Trump said of him: "This gentleman has worked very hard, and is very brave, and his people are very brave." Ushakov said Trump and Putin agreed to speak again "promptly" after Trump's meeting with Zelenskyy. Trump and Zelenskyy met at Trump's private club in Palm Beach, where the U.S. president is spending the holidays.

In 2025, melting sea ice allowed a Canadian icebreaker to enter the world's last ice area
Often referred to as one of the last places in the world with year-round sea ice, these waters have historically been difficult to access because of the thickness of the ice. But melting sea ice has opened a path for a Canadian research icebreaker to sail through some of these passageways for the first time ever. (Alexandre Normandeau)Babb, who was part of the expedition, explained that there are two types of ice: seasonal ice and multi-year ice. The fact that an icebreaker is able to enter one of the world’s last refuges of sea ice is yet another startling sign of the effects of climate change. “We were finding really deteriorated and heavily melted sea ice.... Fortunately, both scientifically and personally, it was reassuring to know that we did start to find some thicker ice [further south],” he said.

Father starts petition to make education a constitutional right for son with learning disabilities
After waiting four years to get his son the support the family says he needs to navigate school with learning challenges, a father from London, Ont. Richard Hackett, 41, started a petition earlier this month calling on Ottawa to recognize them under the consitution. “We shouldn’t be in this mess,” said Hackett, noting the petition garnered almost 5,000 signatures in three weeks. Richard Hackett, 41, started a petition on December 4th, calling for the government to recognize health and education as constitutionally protected rights. In the meantime, Hackett and his family hope that his son can get the help he needs in time.

Two killed in northern Alberta shooting, suspect arrested
One man is in custody after two people were killed near Grande Prairie, Alta. Alberta RCMP arrested a 42-year-old man after issuing a dangerous person alert for northwestern Alberta around 11:30 a.m. In the alert, he was described as armed and dangerous, having already fired on multiple individuals. Police say the suspect and the deceased were known to each other and there is no ongoing danger to the public. Grande Prairie RCMP are investigating.
