Malaysia boosts bio-economy, targets high revenue in 2026
MOSTI Minister Chang Lih Kang said the Bioeconomy Corporation, the ministry’s lead development agency for Malaysia’s biotechnology industry, will drive this growth and steer the country’s bioeconomy toward greater global competitiveness. He expressed confidence in its five-year plan focused on six high-value, high-growth sub-sectors, including next-generation proteins, regenerative propagation, sustainable materials, bio-based chemicals, regenerative medicine and precision diagnostics. CEO of Bioeconomy Corporation Mohd Khairul Fidzal Abdul Razak highlighted a target of at least 2.2 billion MYR (550 million USD) in 2026 revenue from companies under its BioNexus Status and Bio-based Accelerator (BBA) programmes. These are central to Malaysia’s strategy to become an advanced biotechnology nation by 2030. Last year, Malaysian companies supported by the Bioeconomy Corporation recorded a 60% increase in investment and commercial value, rising from 1.55 billion MYR in 2024 to more than 2.44 billion MYR./.

Elderly woman dead after being found outside private Quebec seniors' residence
A woman in her 90s is dead after she was found outside her seniors' residence on Jan. 1, in Lac-au-Saumon, in Quebec’s Lower Saint-Lawrence region. She was a resident at Domaine Lac-au-Saumon, a private seniors' residence. Provincial police say the woman was found outside in critical condition at 8:00 a.m. and emergency personnel attempted to resuscitate her. Provincial police say an investigation is underway to understand the circumstances of the event and an autopsy will be performed. Lepage, who is also head nurse at the facility, told Radio-Canada that the woman lived in the autonomous wing of the residence for almost two years.

Diana Fox Carney, the usually low-profile wife of Prime Minister Mark Carney, not only attended the opening of a women’s-only hockey rink in Sydney, Nova Scotia, on Tuesday — she strapped on her skates and tested it out. Fox Carney appeared alongside her husband while he was on the campaign trail; however, she has largely stayed out of the spotlight since Carney became prime minister in March 2025. Fox Carney was tasked with officially dropping the puck in a matchup game between Sweden and Switzerland, said MP Mike Kelloway in a Facebook post about the event, held at The Kehoe Forum. Kelloway also posted photos from the event, including a picture of himself posing with Fox Carney alongside the university’s president, David Dingwall. Fox Carney was photographed speaking to the girls on the ice and played a scrimmage game with them, Cape Breton Post reported.

Carney visiting China next week to talk trade, security
Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to China next week, marking the first visit to the country by a Canadian prime minister since 2017. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said the trip from Jan. 13 to 17 will see Carney meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss trade, energy, agriculture and international security. While in China, Carney will also meet with its premier, Li Qiang, and other officials. Carney meeting with premiers this month as CUSMA talks intensify
Prime Minister Mark Carney will meet with the premiers in Ottawa later this month, the start of a busy year where the mandatory review of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico-Agreement (CUSMA) kicks into high gear. The prime minister and the premiers have been meeting periodically, often virtually, over the last year in the shadow of U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war. Trump's tariffs continue to punish Canadian sectors including the steel, aluminum and auto industries and spur economic uncertainty. Those talks are expected to intensify this year with the CUSMA review in full swing. Carney's meeting with the premiers falls just days after Parliament returns.
