But there were signs of labor market tightness. The unemployment rate of 4.8% was down four-tenths of percentage point from August, while average hourly earnings increased 0.6% from 0.4% in August. But with COVID-19 infections decreasing and schools fully reopened for in-person learning, more people should be able to rejoin the labor force. The smaller household survey from which the unemployment rate is derived showed 183,000 people left the labor force in September. Even though participation remains low, some aspects of the labor market are improving.

One of my current classes is a course on plastics pollution, which has been very eye opening to me. If you already produce some of the materials, it is easier to produce plastic, and if you produce plastic, it’s beneficial to produce the materials needed. And plastic pollution should also be considered pollution caused by fossil fuels. Plastic pollution isn’t just where it ends up. From its creation to its disposal, plastic pollutes.

MetroWest Daily NewsAdam Steiner has spent his entire lifetime advocating for his hometown of Framingham. While many know Adam as their friendly neighbor, a dedicated soccer dad, husband to Kerry, and a hardworking public servant, for me he is a vital partner on the city council advocating for our community’s residents and ensuring that Framingham receives vital support from the Commonwealth. Adam has a proven track record of working with diverse groups to determine the best interest of Framingham. His independent, balanced voice should remain on the Framingham City Council, and this November, please join me in making sure he is re-elected. Rep. MetroWest Daily NewsSuperintendent Tremblay suggested in a recent piece (MDN, Sept. 24) that our children do better in their school work when we allow ourselves to be amazed by the wonder of what they’re learning. When we focus less on standardized MCAS measures and the like especially from the pandemic-produced period that created such an extremely stressful learning environment, we open ourselves to this most enlivening aspect of our consciousness - learning. He describes the pursuit of education in its most sublime form; that is, as Horace Mann’s great equalizer. At its best, education puts equality within our grasp, though it’s up to us to reach out. Each of these educators envisions a thriving, learning environment and exhorts us to savor all that connects us in celebration of our shared, human nature.

First, in Massachusetts, there is a law against income source discrimination which prevents any landlord or corporation from refusing to accept a rental subsidy. Next, one must apply for a rental subsidy such as the Section-8 (federal) or the MRVP-mobile (Massachusetts Rental Voucher Program - Mobile.) One can receive "local preference" from a local housing authority in your city or town, providing the authority has taken up its dual role: administrating local public housing and administrating local rental subsidies. One can apply for section-8 on a centralized list where other applicants are subjectively put ahead of you, making the wait twenty-plus years. According to Lawyers for Civil Rights in Boston, "Here in Massachusetts, submitting a rental assistance application is like sending it into a black hole..."Ann KarnofskyHopkinton

Ahead of Wednesday’s hearing, several LGBTQ and allied groups rallied outside the Texas State Capitol to protest the proposed bill. Participating organizations included the Human Rights Campaign, the Transgender Education Network of Texas, Equality Texas, ACLU of Texas, Texas Freedom Network, and Lambda Legal. “The Texas Legislature’s persistence in pursuing legislation that harms transgender youth reveals their perverse priorities,” Human Rights Campaign Texas State Director Rebecca Marques said in a statement. Nearly 4,000 of those “crisis contacts” were transgender youth. A bill in Idaho barring transgender students from competing in women’s sports was blocked by a federal judge last year.

TOKYO (Reuters) – Taiwan’s TSMC and Japan’s Sony Group Corp are considering jointly building a chip factory in Japan, with the government ready to pay for some of the investment of about 800 billion yen ($7.15 billion), the Nikkei reported on Friday. Both Sony and TSMC declined to comment, while Denso was not immediately available to comment. TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker and major Apple Inc supplier had said in July that it was reviewing a plan to set up production in Japan. TSMC has been concerned about the the concentration of chipmaking capability in Taiwan, which produces the majority of the world’s most advanced chips. Japanese officials are also worried about the supply chain stability of its industries, with a global chip shortage forcing automakers to cut production.
